2 separate questions. Let me explain each as well as I can.
First, is the a/c currently working? If so leave it alone. If not, you need to fix the leak, from what I've understood all you NEED to do is change the fill valves and fill with r134a and correct oil. BUT! There are 2 134 oils pag and ester. I'm pretty sure you use ester, but have that confirmed, if you use the wrong one it can do damage to the compressor and all the aluminum a/c parts...
Next, for the cam change... What motor do you have? 350, 455? What's done to it? Stock? Rebuilt?
Cam changes are nearly worthless without the compression to make it work right.
As for the th400 trans, it will take what you throw at it for the most part. You may want a shift kit for firmer, more "defined", shifts. Also, converter stall speed makes a big difference in the way the car reacts to the cam. If you want to stay 15-1800 stall you are pretty much stuck near stock. Also, rear gear ratio plays a role in this too.
And now for the more experience to fill you in on the details.

if your wanting more check to see whats in there first, then if small I would at at least go to a 3.43 or close to it.......the shift kit will help define your shifts more but maybe step up to a higher stahll I have a 355 and had a 2800 stall and was very very happy with that selction with 3.43 gears ONLY a one wheel wonder but still was alot of fun
