I have a 72 cutlass with a 350 and dual exhaust I've got some quiet Midas mufflers on it right now but I am wanting to upgrade to something with a little bit of a growl when you step on it but are not obnoxious . Any recommendations besides Flowmaster or dynaflows?

Try a set of these. I haven't used them but would love to. I have looked at these and they are built like a tank. Not cheap but I think they have a high cool factor.

I like the sound of the Pypes Racepro's on my 455. They are fairly quiet until you put a load on the engine then they growl quite nicely.

 

Magnaflow or Dynomax for a nice sound that is not Flowmaster obnoxious yet still provides good flow.

 

Better flow, actually. I don't know how Flowmaster gets their combination of obnoxious noise AND more restriction than other aftermarket mufflers.

Personally, I prefer the Walker Dynomax turbos. I use the 14" versions with 2.5" pipes. I do have a Magnaflow on my 62 due to how it fits, and it's OK but I'd still rather have a Dynomax. Interestingly, the Magnaflow has apparently gotten quieter over the last five years. I assume that's due to carbon loading in the fiberglass packing. Either that, or I'm getting deafer...

 

DynoMax 17749 Suoer Turbo mufflers.

Perfect muscle car sound, no drone, and great at cruise.

 

I like the Dynomax mufflers also. Gives a nice tone down the road at cruise that lets me hear the stereo and sound really nice when you open it up. Since I've abused my hearing over the years, I can't stand the constant drone of some mufflers. I would recommend going to car shows and listening to other exhaust systems and inquire to the ones you think sound like what your looking for.

 

I upgraded my original exhaust to a full 2 1/2" system w/vx series muffler VX2543 (just like flowmaster but half the cost) and used the flowmaster 2 1/2" prebent tail pipes and pypes exhaust 2 1/2" stainless trumpet tips.

Hooker AeroChambers will make your stock engine sound rather tough, I had them on my stock 70 350 with 2 1/4" dual exhaust and was very impressed. They are mild when cruising but loud when you want them to be.

I liked them so much, I also put them on my built 350 with headers and full 2 1/2" dual exhaust and it sounds great!

Hi ima noob i to have a similar question...i have a 73' 98 Regency with thw 455 that i had a dual exhaust added to...i installed flowmaster 40 and they are too loud...i was goin for the deep throaty rumble but i didnt expect to wake up the neighborhood any suggestion? On what to do what to buy what to delete? Also it doesnt have cats

 

Hooker aerochambers are the way to go. They are loud though . Atleast in my app but i run an x pipe and turn downs at the axle.

I actually like the thrush turbo mufflers for the nice rumble but not too agressive. I installed them on my dads pontiac which has one of my old olds 350's in it and The sound is perfect. not too loud not too quiet .

 

IMO, I like the "Dynamax" muff myself. They have that deep rumble. I like the tailpipes over the axle and out to the side behind the wheel, or out the back to the bumper. I recommend going with 2.5 inch pipes. I have "X" pipe on one car and an "H" pipe set up on another. The Thrush turbo muff, is pretty good also. had them on other cars.
I just not a fan of flowmasters and do not like turn downs at all.
I had some Magnaflow's on one car, I hated them, and toss them in the trash. I don't know what number or model they were, they just didn't cut it for me.

Magnaflow and dynomax turbo muffler, if you want that nice deep rumble without a drone. IMO chambered mufflers like flowmaster have that raspy sound and annoying drone.

 

redoldsman, loved the sound of those Porter mufflers. Especially the bigger ones from the trucks. I'm into a bit of a subdued sound. Probably be tough to put the bigger truck ones under the car though.

 

I put a set from Summitt on my 77. 2.5" kit all the way and the mufflers that came with it. They have a real nice sound IMO. Not too much that they are over bearing, just enough to let you know that there is something there. I've heard people compare them to the old Walker systems.

 

I've had Magnaflows & liked them. Well made & stainless steel.

I had magnaflows before, and there too quiet.
My father has flowmasters ( the quietest ones forgot the name) on his 442 that sound great. But quieter than the dynomaxes that i have.

 

I've got to agree. I really like the Dynomax muffles. They've got a nice sound. Not loud at all when cruising, and not super loud when you step on it, but it's got a nice tone that'll get people attention.

No real drone. You can hear them, but again, it's not that low rumbling annoying drone.

 

I have 2 1/4" dual exhaust with an H pipe. I use Flowmaster 50 muffler. They have enough of a rumble but don't drone when cruising at 80. I drive a lot and don't want a loud exhaust.

 

I know Flowmaster gets flamed on this site but the video I have in my sig says it all.

 

I'm a Flowmaster fan. On my other car (Non-Oldsmobile) I have straight duals, 2.5 inch pipe, no crossover, X, or H pipe. I have the first series 3-chamber Flowmasters. I get no droning or anything of the sort. However, I have the interior of the car insulated with super high tech components... firewall blanket, and closed cell foam carpet underlayment. All that great sound stays outside.

 

I have Smithy's steel pak mufflers on the Silver Bullet, CCRider, and Lovey Dovey. Old school, just a very nice low sound, even at highway speeds.

 

I agree with My442, I have a set of these on my olds, started out on the car with the olds 350, headers, and 2" exhaust. They had 2.5" in/out, so we cut the old flanges off, and I have them again on the 455, with manifolds from Thornton mfg, 2.5" pipes. Sounds great so far... Haven't put more than 30 miles on it since completed. Drove from the body shop home and that is it...

 

I'm from the UK so we don't get the choice you guys get, but I've seen a couple of Youtube videos of cars fitted with Spintech mufflers that have very a distinctive sound and from what I can gather, they are both well built and seem reasonable in price.

I had them on my 88 Cutlass. Sanderson shorty headers, custom head pipes into a compact X pipe then into a Hooker Cat back, the Y pipe replaced for the X. The car sounded amazing. Wicked sound and not terribly loud, very minor droning. I moved that system onto my 70S. Somehow the awesome WOT sound is gone and much more drone part throttle and louder. I didn't swap tail pipes, so I added full length pipes, almost no difference. It may be the 88 being a Brougham was much more padded and underneath must have changed the acoustics. Funny thing is the less than 2" dual system off the 70S sounds the same under the 88 or very close, maybe slightly quieter now having tail pipes. The Summit Turbos and Dynomax Superturbo mufflers are quiet. I just noticed this is a 3 year old Post.
