MSD & Timing

I bought a MSD set up, box, dist, coil. I was told that is would respond well. The timing marker on the car is painted over so i can't tell what the marks mean. It is a 69 Olds 350. A little bit of a cam, a little more then stock parts. It seems like everyone is guessing what the timing should be.
Does anyone have experience with this set up? I went from a HEI vacuum to this. The car should more power then it does and it's running hotter then it does. It's always a 180 degree car, now it's pushing 200+
If anyone can walk me through the steps, I would be in debt.

I would start by cleaning the paint off harmonic balancer and the scale on the block.

You don't have to see the numbers, the notches on the tab should be all you need once you know what they mean (see image from Supercars Unlimited below).

Note that if you had a HEI and it was not recurved, you likely weren't able to set the initial timing high enough using just the timing tab since it goes to 14º max and the HEI initial is in the 18º-20º range. If your MSD distributor is similar to the HEI, you'll be in the same situation. Not enough initial timing may explain why your engine is running warm.
