Motor rebuild parts

I have pulled out my motor and taken off the heads and intake I found a build up of some kind in one cylinder which will not allow it to turn over completly I plan on scraping it off so the motor will turn freely it doe not look like it will affect anything.any way to my point I know all parts are not the same but is there a brand the is better then the others . to be truthfull I was just going to go to JCWhitney and get a rebuild kit.I have a 1968 olds 350.

I will take photos. it is like a hard sludge. I noticed when I removed the intake
there was a tin pan covering the lifter area and it was blackend around that cylinder port.
I don't how long the car sat before I got it.
