Mecum auto auction
Mecum Auto Auction is coming to Houston in April. I plan on being there both days. My very good friend now has classic car itch and badly wants to bid on a 1953 Olds Starfire Convertible. The car is drop dead gorgeous.I told him that car if it sells is probably going to cost well over 125,000. He thinks maybe 80-100 grand. I plan on bidding on a car also but no near where this type of money. Any opinions on what price range this car might fall in?

I looked at the cars that will be at both auctions and between the the Houston and Kansas City Auction, there are only a total of 14 Oldsmobiles out of 1350 cars. Where are all the Oldsmobiles? I guess we Olds guys are hanging onto our cars. There are however some very good looking cars at both of them.

Car prices are down big time lately. I have a sign in on Mecum and look up all the selling prices after each auction. There were two 1959 Caddie convertibles sold as a pair at Barrett Jackson for $80K and one of them was a frame-off. That same auction sold a 36 Cord 810 in mint condition for $36K. I reviewed all the Houston cars and lusted after this Starfire. However, due to economic reality, I say it gets $80K tops.

Then how many times have they chosen just when an Olds is actually about to come across the block to go to commercial!? It annoys the hell out of me. They don't even necessarily go back and review the cars they missed while on break and what happened with the bidding.
I think it just shows that they don't expect much in the way of Oldsmobile interest, and so if they have to choose a place to stick in their commercial breaks, when an Olds is crossing the block is as good a choice as any as far as they're concerned.

Yes I saw that it did not meet the reserve, I was surprised. The car that my buddy wants I found the Dealer on line who is selling it and he is asking 99,000 at his dealership. . There were very few Olds for auction. There was a 67 442 that did not meet the reserve at 30k and it looked like a really great car but not much bidding was taken place with it. There were so many Corvettes and more than a few first generation Camaro's that sold.

Wow. I notice this, too. I like watching these auctions on TV, but after a while you get tired of seeing one Chevelle after another after another interspersed with more "mid-year" Corvettes than you can shake a stick at going across the block. I like those guys who cover the auctions, and I certainly like seeing the old cars as much as the next person, but there's only so much gushing over them one can stand.
