I think this is the third sale of this car in the last 10 years including the sale from the Bush's. The repaint was lousy but being that it's such a historical car, I can't believe how cheap it has sold.
The original paint was a key part to the Mod Rod. Unfortunately, the repaint really missed the mark which is likely what contributed to the car taking at hit at the auction over the weekend.
The color combo on the car whether it’s a quality repaint or not is one that few would appreciate. Personally it’s ugly, if I owned it, it would be repainted. What is the story on this car as far as the funky spray?
As far as I know, it was a try-hard concept by Olds to tap into the dying 60s pop scene to get some relevance. I think it was seen as try-hard and didn't really go anywhere.
The repaint is a classic example of "just because you have a paint gun doesn't mean you're a painter." The car is supposed to smoothly blend, now it looks like Neapolitan ice cream.
I know it was the '60's and there are countless examples of stuff like this but this car just looks to me like some marketing team told a group of interns to come up with something unique in the eleventh hour. Nothing on it strikes me as really creative and that interior definitely falls into the category of 'what were they thinking?'.
I read somewhere that the original seats in this car were made out of wood. I believe it was built for the show circuit. I also read that this car was destined to be scrapped and Mr. Bush talked GM in to letting him buy it.
Although the 68 convertible 442 is in my opinion thee sharpest droptop of all 442’s, the lines on the convertible are beautiful. The 68 hardtop just didn’t flow to me. Of course I am bias as my first 442 was a 68 convertible.. This glamour show car schematic was a bit to much Rowan and Martin for my tastes.. but as the old saying goes, there’s an *** for every seats so somebody’s enjoying it and that’s what’s important. Is the car being saved..
I'd like to see more pics of the original car and I hope the new owner repaints in a more correct manner. That's a neat car with neat history. Wasn't it at MCACN recently?

Considering the era, more likely "what were they trippin' on?"
Historic car regardless. I also agree that the '68 Cutlass/442 'vert has the best lines of any GM A-body. That back 3/4 view is like spying a voluptuous woman walking away. Ka dunk a dunk!

Whereas the original was more of a Creamsicle.
With regard to the new listing, if $44K was all the money two weeks ago, what makes them think it will fetch anything close to $125K anytime soon? Does a buyer that ignorant actually exist?
Was the “Apollo” car the one with separated right & left rear seats? I remember a “concept” or car show car that had that, which my mind’s eye thinks had a similar paint scheme to the one discussed here.
