mecum 1972 feature car Florida
There is a feature car at the next Mecum auction 1972 442 convertible. They are saying it is rare because it has some hurst floor shift option. I have never seen this and am not sure it a real option. The console has a four speed boot and looks made up to me. But what do I know I have just owned 20 442s.....Lee

There are a lot of things "wrong" with that car ("headrest delete" option? Rare two tone upholstery? Puh-lease.). It has an automatic trans, it has a manual trans console, and they are using the production number from the three speed manual transmission-equipped cars. I guess it may be possible that it did start life as one of the three speed manual cars but was later converted. Lots of open questions...

Ayyyy, that was Tony Soprano's vehicle.
Didn't they have to have headrests by fed law in '71?
The W39 Hurst 3 speed performance floor shifter was only available with the manual transmission, you had to get it if you ordered the W29 option so the manual console would be correct if it was also ordered.
That Sun tach with a Hurst sticker or box cut-out stuck on it doesn't look too right, what option was that? Looks a little funky with that steering column type mounting base on it too.
Lots of open questions is right.

Wow, is it BS season for auction cars? Note the automatic trans shift pattern on the console behind the shifter. That's a bottom-trolling Hurst Indy-Matic shifter in a manual trans console. If you go to their website and mouse over the photo, a text box pops up that says S271 1972 Oldsmobile 442 convertible 350/310, 3-speed automatic Photo 4. What a crock!!!!!
Yet again, this is why I don't pay attention to auctions. Gotta like that 1977 350/310 motor too.

My BS meter is GLOWING red!!! I have a REAL sour taste in my mouth over a personal deal with Dana Mecum over two cars a few years back . The best thing I ever did was NOT to do any business with him. And yes, head restraints (head rests) were mandatory starting in (I think)1969. That car probably is not a bucket seat car---no photos of the speedo.

You did a good job answering my question. The most difficulty I was having was as a proud Olds owner letting that car be one of the feature cars (Saturday) which is supposed to be the best cars. To me it is a very poor example of what I would like to see as a feature car representing the heritage of our Oldsmobiles. Celebrity owned means nothing to me.
My originally from Pennsylvania 1972 "x " vin w-30 convertible 4 speed painted teal with cream stripes by the person that bought it from me was represented in a recent auction as a California car that was possibly a show car when new. When I bought the car 20 years ago it was the correct brown and had Pennsylvania plates.

It does to me.
It's a warning that they're overcharging for the car , whatever it is.
It's also a misdirection label......if a Celebrity owned it , it must be LEGIT!!!!
That kinda ordeal. Never look at Celebrity owned cars.
Well......unless it was owned by Goldberg, then I know it's probably legit.
