Matching numbers
I have a 77 Olds Cutlass S, trying to determine if its a matching numbers vehicle. Is the engine number that's stamped on the oil fill tube supposed to match the last six numbers of the VIN?

I wouldn't worry too much about the numbers on the oil fill tube as they are very easy to swap out from engine to engine. The numbers you want to look for are on a machined pad at the corner by the #1 cylinder just below the head. At least that's where it is on earlier models so I assume a 77 is the same.

The stamped numbers on the tube is the tubes part number not the engines.
The engine serial number is located on the front right of the block(viewed as your standing under the hood). This number will have what you need to see if the block matches the vin. Example 37M...then the last 6 digits in your vin should be here.
There is numbers/and a letter(s) on the timing chain deck above the water pump which will identify the engine code. Facing the front of the engine, at the top surface of the timing chain area, to the right of the oil fill tube, there is a code about 1.5" high followed by the casting number. EX: 3B557752 which is a 77-80, 350

The number on the tube that the manual is referring to is a code. Its a paper tag wrapped around the top of the tube with the engines application code usually 2 letters which indicate what configuration the engine was made for such as...2 barrel, 4 barrel, auto, stick shift, CA smog etc...
