Machine shops

What do machine shops do if you want your engine rebuilt? Nothing performance. Just back to how it was originally. Do they use new parts like pistons and stuff. Like all of the hard parts or do they just resurface and machine them?

very few 'machine shops' around me rebuild engines, they refinish or mill stuff brought to them by indy shops or individuals. cut valves, surface heads, bore blocks, stuff like that.

most of them now run big CNC mills and they pay if they keep em humming nearly 24x7, less labor.

Typically, the block is bored out so new pistons are mandatory.

The old pistons are pressed off the rods, the rods can be checked for proper dimensions and straightness, and the new pistons are pressed on.

The crankshaft is usually turned down on main and rod journals. New bearings are then required.

Heads are rebuilt by refinishing the valve seats and possibly installing new valve guides.
Sometimes hardened exhaust seats are installed.
New valves can be installed or if the old ones are in good shape, they can be refinished to seal properly.
New valve seals and possibly springs are needed.
The head to block surfaces can be milled for flatness and/or to remove material to decrease the combustion chamber volume/increase the compression ratio.

That's the main stuff.

Clean block check for cracks and defects check deck for straightness hone or bore cylinders chek alignment of bearings, crank throughly chec
ked cut and polised if needed remove old pistons check rods for cracks, straightness bearing area install cam bearings, freeze plugs and oil plugs for distributor and cam gear That's the basics for the block all parts can be bought and installed by shop or you can reasemble. The block must be throughly cleaned be for any parts installed

Is the oil pump replaced with a long block remanufactured?

Yes, absolutely. I didn't post everything new in a rebuild, just the main things a machine shop may do.

No one mentioned that the first thing a good machine shop does is measuring the bore and journals to determine if actual machining is required.
