Yes--dumpster material for sure. Back then, we would get all kinds of banners, streamers, and window-ads several times throughout the year and then a big blitz before "New-Car Anouncement". The stuff was literally thrown in the dumpster. Some of the small stuff was saved if it was able to be used again, but most was discarded. What a shame! I have some neat stuff from my dad, and some from when I sold, but mostly items that he and I used as personal promotions---key fobs, pens, old business cards, etc. I do have a real cool "442" tie bar (absolutely mint condition) that the salesman would have worn in 1966. I also have some "Vanguard" (Oldsmobile Salesman's Elite club) items that my grandfather, father and I received as awards for certain sales achievements. I think I sent you a copy of that 1965 442 ad showing my dad---we had stuff like that all the time and just threw it away---that's why that ad means so much to me. Holy Crap!!!!! That's the dealership where my parents bought my car!!!! I still have the dealer tag that was on the trunk of the car since new. Awesome!!!!!!

Hey TK-65, a couple of questions before I leave for the dealership;
Where do find such COOOOL stuff? and Do you have anything or ever heard of
"Stu Berger Olds" from Towson, Maryland? My dad was MGR there in '67 and I sold my first Olds there in 1979. I remember it like it was yesterday-- a light blue 1979 Cutlass Supreme w/ an aftermarket landau top to an elderly lady named Viola Eisenstein. Boy! you dig up some neat stuff! BTW, Stu Berger was an attorney that owned the dealership and never used a floor plan from GM, he owned EVERY car on the lot---kinda un-heard-of in the new car business.

 

Thanks a TON TK!!!! I can't believe you found it! You can just about see that his middle finger was cut off to make it yearbook-friendly. Sorry for not responding sooner, and I guess you figured it out, but El Camino is in South San Francisco, which is a separate city from San Francisco. I don't get it myself even though I'm a native, and the two cities aren't even adjacent to each other. My '69 was bought new at Howard Olds in Burlingame; would love to see some shots from there (possibly from Burlingame High or Mercy Burlingame). I think it became Gabrielson Olds at some point and finally Mike Harvey.

Ever hear of Ladendorf Olds? Des Plaines Ill. That's where mine was origionally purchased. These are some great pix. It must have been so cool to go in and go down the order sheet to really make your car how you want it. Although that can backfire. My uncle worked for Oldsmobile in Lansing back in the day, and he special ordered his car that bright green metallic with a brown vinyl top and brown interior. It was hideous and I remember him coming to Minn. for Christmas one year with it and he said he wished he hadn't chosen those colors. ooops...

Hi Jason: You may have solved an interesting mystery related to my car by posting the picture above of the 1970 w-30 in the Hansel Olds ad. You see, Rug the original owner of my car ordered a w-30 convertible from Hansel Oldsmobile and by mistake a gold hardtop with white vinyl top and interior was build and delivered to the dealer. Rug refused that car and his convertible was delivered (the car I own now) some months later. I am pretty certain the car in the picture is the incorrect car that he ordered and the dealer had to sell it to another buyer. Although we cannot tell it must be a 4 speed w-27 car that is either owned or scraped by now. Interesting to see that picture because Rug told me the story and I wonder how many white vinyl top w-30s were delivered to California dealerships and specifically Hansel Olds ..........thanks for posting and continuing your good deeds for the hobby......

Sadly, much of the signage probably was simply thrown away. Thankfully, literature vendors such as Walter Miller and others carry the occasional piece, and others are traded on Ebay on occasion. I have a small collection myself, including a large banner celebrating the success of several '65 models at the Pure Oil "Performance" trials held that year in Daytona. Not exactly the same thing, but I also have an intact scrapbook sent to Olds dealers and containing many line drawings, artwork and titles meant to be "cut and pasted" to make newpaper ads for the '65 models. The "stuff" is out there.

A few guys have the dealer packets that explain the 65 442 and how to market them to the young buyer. But youre right, most of that model year stuff was tossed when the new cars came in.
