Locating speakers
Locating speakers
67 Cutlass 442 Convertible if I wanted to add additional speakers ( I only have the front one that is with the radio) to accommodate an 8 track player are there any suggestions as to where to place them (be nice) other than in rear seat arm rest. I don't like the way they look there. and in front kick panels I understand the left one gets in the way of the e-brake assembly. Has anyone done something different? Thanks, Mike
I have the kick panel speakers and there is no interference with the park brake assembly. I have read before that if yours is too close, you can loosen the mounting bolts and move the mechanism over slightly to give more clearance.
And for the rear, I have a pair of 6x9 in boxes that sit on the rear seat, on the floorboard, in the convertible top well, or in the trunk (disconnected) depending upon the situation.

Not sure what the be nice meant, you expecting us to recommend proctology? Haha.
On a more serious note, a few suggestions.
1. The Olds 8 track actually used the existing speakers and cut in via a switch to "steal" them from the radio. You could do this.
2. Repro speakers are made by turnswitch, com and other places.
3. You could put a rear speaker in the stock location.
4. You could have speakers in their own boxes sitting in the rear seat footwells that you unplug and put in the trunk for shows and rear seat passengers.

Koda, I maybe missed something? Where is the stock location for the rear speaker on a convertible? did they have a rear seat like the impala used to have? and my car doesn't have that seat. I may just use front speaker like you mentioned. Thanks
It's in the trunk. Put your top up and open the trunk and look at the backseat's back frame, there should be some holes in a familiar pattern in the middle.
67 Cutlass / 442 had few options for radio. AM, and AM/FM. Single speaker, or the Bi Phonic Speaker Adapter. Pull off your tuning **** and look behind it. Your stock radio has two speaker wires, but only one speaker output. That output is the middle hole of three holes arranged vertically, with one of the outer holes jumped with a piece of wire.
Replace that wire and your dummy **** behind the tuner with this adapter with three pins and a potientometer, and you now have fader, and a rear mono.
Edit: I am wrong on the rear speaker existing, see Joe's comment above.
You can then hang the speaker in the back spot and run wire.
8 track. you need to adapt from later years or big cars, but the two speaker output from the radio goes into the two speaker input from the 8 track, and the outputs from the 8 track go to the speakers. You can then have stereo 8 track, when it cuts in, and mono AM/FM.

Thanks Koda and Joe for the update and option list & adapter info. any idea where to locate this Bi Phonic Speaker Adapter?
