Like buttons?

After being here a while I am just seeing a like button and share buttons at the end of a thread. Did I miss seeing this or is it new?
Don't really care for this. I consider my comments for this site and community only.

I think they've been there for a while, but I will admit I never really noticed them, as I ignore all of that "social media" crap anyway.

I think its an internal thing to this site only. Does not connect to social media.

Oh. Could be. I always ASSume that the "thumbs up" logo indicates FaceBook involvement.

The share button connects with Facebook. This would allow anyone to send the thread. I assume tweet does the same thing. I am rather funny about peeps sending what I post to another site.
For example: MD, just sent your post to further your market research project.

Doubtful that it's internal only.

Typically, info on your 'Likes' (topics of positive interest) is collected and x-ref'd with your email address by the site company (Internet Brands in this case). That info is provided/sold upstream and collated with other pieces of info from other sources based on your email address (& other factors). This allows marketing companies to develop a profile of your interests and create 'targeted marketing' for advertisers.

It's big bidness...

Yes it is and every entity you deal with in life does it. I get advertising for bogus warranty policies from info that the state sells when I register my cars. I know its the state because its the only place my wife, who has no middle name, has to put something there anyway. Then we receive stuff addressed under that name.

On websites, every key word is monitored and you receive advertising based on that. If you search the web, you get advertising based on those searches. Welcome to the tech age.

I understand the likes and the selling of preferences and ads, it is how it all stays free.
My point is that if a person chooses to share a thread with Facebook or other site, what you say here goes anywhere beyond your control, without your permission. I have not tested this theory to see if it is how it works.
It does annoy me when I go somewhere to look at purchasing then whenever I go elsewhere I get the targeted ads.
Anyone want to post a thread, share it and see where it goes for a test?
How about posting your number and something for sale? It is OK if the seller wants it to happen, but what about items you only want to stay in this community and someone else shares it?
Don't mean to rock the boat, just want answers.

But that's what's going on anyway, by definition.

This BBS is public. It is accessible to all people and bots. Anyone who types "Oldsmobile FaceBook button" will likely find it.

Everything we write here is public.

As Eric said, every post you have made on here is public and can be read by anyone doing a search on info or thread topics. They can also do a google search by your user name. Anywhere on the world wide web your username shows up, the search will display the content.

It's just below the last post of a thread.

Top left of the initial post and bottom left of the last post. I'm assuming that's what the poster means when he said like button." f like box" "Share" etc.

Strange. I have it below the last post. A like button, a share button that when pressed asks for my Facebook password, a button marked G+1, whatever that is, a Tweet button and a funny looking icon that says "Submit to Reddit " when I hover on it.
Using Win 10, Firefox with Adblock.
