Which license plate # would you choose?
Hey,
I celebrated my 21st Birthday today and my Dad gave me the 66 cutlass we are about to restore as a present He said I deserve it, as I put so much time, and effort into it, that it just has to be mine needless to say it was the best birthday present I could imagine
Now it's time for me to choose the numbers and letters on the license plates.
I wanted something Olds-related and wanted to ask for your ideas and opinions.
The license plate has to start with WM then one or two letters and two , three or four numbers.
For example: WM OC 66
WM O 442
WM O 1966
Just let me know what you think

Either of those is fine. But I'd probably change the O to something like the production plant code (M - Lansing, Z - Freemont etc.) and make the last 4 numbers 3867. That's the code for Cutlass Convertible in 66. Anyway just a thought.

Well- the first thing is Happy Birthday! Is turning 21 as significant in Germany as it is in US?
I'm thinking a lot of Olds numbers and codes would have no significance in Europe except maybe at one of the big American car meets y'all have over there.
Have you thought about WM F 85 or WM F 8566? since the factory considered all the A-body Oldsmobiles to be F85's.
I always enjoyed coming up with personalised license plate combinations but as they all have antique or year of manufacture plates now, can't have that much fun.
I had I8JAPAN on the 1976 Ninety Eight for many years. Friends used to call it a Godzilla car because it was so big, so the plate fit it well.

In my case it would be M 3867, but it's already spoken for :-/

For us the 18th birthday is as significant as the 21st in the US.
We are allowed to drink beer from our 16th birthday on and with 18 we're allowed to do whatever we want to do!
But for me it is still something very special because now I'm finally allowed to rent and drive a car in the US, go into bars, casinos...which is very important for my future trips to the US
WM F 85 is unfortunately not possible, as there have to be at least 4 and maximum 5 digits in the end
WM F 8566 is on my list thank you
What did the "8" exactly stand for on your plate back then? I could imagine two different possibilities^^
Why couldn't you keep the plates?
#7
8 meant "ate" as in Godzilla ate Japan. I8TOKYO was already in use on a Cadillac in Virginia at that time. That plate was made famous on ZZ Top's "Cadzilla" custom Cadillac http://www.streetsupercars.com/RawSu...dzilla%20a.jpg
I could have kept the plate, but it cost an extra $25 a year over regular license plates. When it turned 25 years old I put state-issued Virginia antique vehicle plates on it which are a permanent type plate with a one-time fee, good for as long as you own the vehicle. Those plates exempt the car from safety/ emissions inspections and property taxes, so it was strictly a financial thing.

I like it, I just checked it and it's in use as well I have the impression that every number with a 66 in it is admired for whatever reason.
Seems to be a big age group...

That Cadzilla looks pretty ugly from behind
Yes plates are not worth the extra money! Especially when you are allowed choose your front license plate yourself right? Or is it just allowed in a few states?

It would be available for 1965 and 1967 but not 1966
But please keep those great ideas coming, I'm sure one will be available
The available ones I found until now are WM O 1966, WM O 442 and WM F 8566

Just thought I'd write down the available plates ending on 66 and 1966
WM OL 66
OB 66 (OldsmoBile) OB is the name of the most popular tampon brand, so I guess it is ruled out
DQ 66
CY 66
CQ 66
DY 66
WM Q 1966
O 1966
Y 1966
with 442 (I know it's not a 442, but I know I'll have one one day and it's the first number you think of when you hear oldsmobile right? )
WM O 442
WM MY 442
Never thought that choosing a number could be so difficult...

Neither did I. When I got my Antique Auto plates I got 2 different sets registered to the car.
1. The original 1972 license plate (it's also listed as the alt license on the car's registration)
2. The DMV plate. I had no choice in the number but I thought it was a pretty cool plate number and EASY to remember. M - 016. Take it anyway you want M (lansing) 16 when I got my license. Or plain old M=16 just like the assault rifle!

Unfortunately there are no letters allowed in the last digits
It always has to be this scheme:
WM/1 or 2 letters/up to four numbers
I just checked and WM MY 676 is available with the 7 standing for the T

It's already taken see ^^^^
What about WM WM 1966 (the second WM could stand for W-Machine if you ever decide to punch up the performance)
WM HP 1966 High Performance 1966
WM HP 3867 High Performance vert model
WM HP (- - - - ) Horse Power (insert HP rating in brackets?)

Well I finally got my car registered on friday and found some time to update my threads
When I went to the office my choice was WM MY 442, with WM O 442 and WM O 1966 as plan B...those were the only ones available!
I spent three hours there, because they wanted to impose a plate as big as a baking plate on me, because the small ones are only for bikes
Finally I could convince them, that it won't fit into the designated location, and they made an exception, so that I got the small plates, with the disadvantage, that I could only take 4 digits after the WM, because more would not have fit.
So I took WM O 442, but I will keep my eyes open until WM MY 66 gets available!
The H after the numbers means "historic"
Here is a photo of my current plate in comparison to the size the wanted to give me and one of a US-size plate lying on the baking plate^^
It doesn't look like a big difference on the pictures, but it would've looked ugly!
Thanks for all your input!

Dan,
Looks good. What are the 2 round decals beside the WM? BTW your Iowa plate is exactly the same color as the original 72 plate I have for my car. Only I have 2 letters and 4 numbers. Simpler times when cars weren't as plentiful as today.

I'll upload a closeup pic of the inspection decal!
Did your car originally come from Iowa? It looks a lot better on or cars than the modern plates in my opinion!

LOL no it was built in Lansing! Then immediately exported to Canada. My Dad bought a 72 off the showroom floor of Don Wheaton Chev Olds (Matador Red Cutlass S) and the license plate I have is for that car. We only use one plate here in Alberta so on the front of mine I have the dealer showroom plate.

That's pretty cool! I'm sure you have already uploaded some pictures of it somewhere right?

Dan, just messin with ya a bit. Yes, as a matter of fact I have 3 albums on my C.O. homepage. Feel free to take the tour. I have write ups under a lot of them providing info on what you see. And if you take time to watch the top banner on the website change every 10 seconds or so, my car shows up there too!
I really enjoyed your pics and the additional information under them! You have some cool options I've heard about the tic-toc-tach, but I've never seen the Y-71 option before! I like it
Now that you say it, I noticed some other cars I know

Hey Brian,
My e-mails don't seem to get through so I have to answer here!
That's no good news there...I do already feel bad about the fact, that you have so much trouble just because of me!
I really appreciate what you are doing, it sure would've been easier for you to throw them away!
Thank you vey much! And thanks for the pictures, I love them. They will have their place beside the plates in my new apartment!
Again, sorry for the inconveniences!
I owe you more than one cold one
