While im saving money to get my 403 built, i fantasize about it on a daily basis. Haha.
Is getting 400 horses out of a 403 unsafe? Its going to be a daily driver. I figure since im spending my money, might as well get something worth it. Im going for 1 hp per cube. Would i have to get the edelbrock heads to get that amount of hp? And would a qjet be fine or would i have to go aftermarket? I want to put 3.73 gears with a posi.
still thinking about the stall and if i would have to go with a 700 4r or if i could keep the200 4r

And any other info if you want. I was just thinking of questions and decided to ask.

I think a hyd. roller cam can easily put you over 400hp with good vacuum for brakes. Edelbrock heads, dual plane intake and '77-'80 modified qjet would be a good reliable combo and shave some weight. No need to buzz it above 5500rpm you've got plenty of cubes, and it's easier on the valve train. jmho Good luck.

Do tons of research on the cam. Most companies list Olds cams as fits 260-455cid which is impossible. Talk to a tech rep, some of the Olds racing suppliers, I use Jones cams a little more pricey but well worth it. Good luck

Not impossible because they use the same cam cores (with some variation of the lifter bank angle on some).
Is it practical to install a cam designed for a 455 in a 260? No. But can you? Yes.

 

The 2004R is just as capable as the 700R4, maybe even better. Both require major hard parts, you may be knocking on 500 ft/lbs of torque. The 4L80E is capable with minor changes for big power but needs a controller and their converters are pricey. Procomp heads are also an option, much better than the stock 4A heads.

 

the edelbrock heads require using an electric fuel pump and a roller cam and valve train setup. Are the procomp heads the same?
