Just got Rallye 350 home today

Well we went up & picked up the Rallye 350 today & I am now going over it & fixen little things, It has a miss at idle & the lifters are ticking a little . It sat for 12 years so I might just run it a little & hope the lifters unstick.
It misses at idle but smooths out when you give it gas. I changed the points & plug wires & checked all the vacume lines for leaks. Has lots of power, feels like a 342 rear.
This car has 85,000 miles & I cant believe how smooth it rides & the clutch feels really smooth too , No need for power steering.
Here is a few pictures on the road in front of our place.
It has lots of little nicks & scratches that dont show in these pictures.

I just noticed that over the years the original owner must have switched out the headlight bezels because they were silver between the two bulbs & around the edges,
I noticed that while looking at my T3 pictures.
Well I couldnt rest so I went out in the garage at 10:45 PM & carefully masked the bezels & sprayed the satin black where it belongs & put them back on.
I think I quit for the day now.

We took it for a nice long ride today & I tracked down the original owner & his brother, (They both owned it over the years).
Motor is not matching the serial number & I asked him about it & he said it blew a piston at 1 year old & Oldsmobile replaced the motor under warranty.
Too bad.
The lifters seem to be quieting down some.
I cant believe how smooth it rides & drives without power steering or brakes.
It takes bumps & manhole covers like a big land yaught full size cadillac.

Add some Marvel Mystery Oil to the engine oil. This may help quiet down your lifters.

Very nice!

Pull those #8's and install #6's. That should get rid of your lifter noise

Too bad indeed. Unfortunately this engine swap happened as the 350s were being detuned.

The Rallye 350s best feature was replaced with a smogger 350.

Still a great car no doubt but it took a 65 HP hit ... At least you don't have to worry about gas quality ...

I wouldn't fret over the engine swap. It's not like you're trying to set low E.T. at the next NHRA shootout! Any horsepower loss could easily be regained with a couple of "day two" mods but my guess is that this car is going to be enjoyed as is (like I would). Fix a few things, drive a bit, detail a bit and have TONS of fun.

Allyolds68 says to pull the 8's & add 6's if he is referring to the heads , they are 6's. Here are clearer photos of both heads.

The 6's are pretty closed loop 6's but they are 6's

I can tell it has #6 heads after accidently putting half a tank of 87 gas in it today & now I have pinging on steep hills in 4th gear.
Can I move the distributor a little to stop that? & wich way?

Put some octane booster in it, don't be in 4th gear on hills and burn out enough fuel to add more 91/93.

You COULD do a very small counter-clockwise adjustment to your distributor to slightly retard timing. You should use a timing light to verify timing before and after making the adjustment. Easier to go to Autozone and pick up some VP octane boost and burn through this tank as was mentioned in above post. Now you know not to run the cheap stuff!

I did the octane booster tonight & added a quart of Marvel Mystery oil & will see what happens.
I wanted to look at the plugs since since I wasnt the person who put them in & Im glad I did because the plugs were gapped at barely 20.
I regapped them at 30.
I have had around 200 vehicles over the 54 years I have been driving & I never had one that was easier to change the spark plugs,( with no power steering,Air, or power brakes there is nothing in your way).
I could have changed these plugs with a white tuxcedo on & not gotten dirty.

Well, the marvel mystery oil must be legit because the lifters are quieter than before & it is running smoother & the octane booster fixed the pinging problem,
All this just after a 5 mile drive today.
I just changed the door handles today, (they were pitted) . Since the car is mostly survivor quality I didnt want to put Repo handles on it so I found a set on Ebay , nice original used unpitted from out west, with repo gaskets.
Its pretty much now ready to take to a few cruises & sit & bullshit about it.

I just checked the rear ratio with the count the turns of the driveshaft method since it has a posi.
I got just under 3 & 1/2 turns so I am saying it is a 342 as I assumed.
The muncie has some numbers on it but I dont know what they mean. It has POA 5B & what looks like 3925661 & a patent number that I figure dont mean much.
I didnt find the serial # but I dont know where to look.
