Junkyards near Albuquerque?
Greetings fellow CO members,
I'm going to be in the Albuquerque area next week and thought I might do some parts hunting. Are there any salvage yards in the area or within a modest drive that would have any 1st gen Toronado's? I'm looking for bits and pieces for my 68 Toro but lots of stuff is the same on the early cars.
Feel free to PM or email <derby1574@wiDOTrrDOTcom>
Thanks,
Brian

Believe it or not, i used to own a junkyard in Albuquerque during the late '80's. Most of the yard's then, and now were on either South Broadway or Isletta Blvd. Get on So Broadway at the Gibson Rd intersection (just north of the airport) and head south. I haven't been there in about ten years but there used to be about a dozen or so (including mine) all along So Broadway. 5J's is one I know is still there. Continue south until you get to I 25, turn right and go to the next exit at Isletta, turn right and go north and you should pass some more. Also drive along South Coors in the same area
Back then New Mexico was an unbelievable place to for a car guy. There used to be incredible old salvage yards all over the place. One, in Alamagordo with cars from the 40's to the 70's was crushed out to make room for a new Wal Mart. That has been the case for many of the old ones unfortunately. I actually pulled a complete but not running 70 GTO Judge out of a yard in Las Cruces back then. One other yard that I believe may still be in operation is in Socorro south of Albuquerque. Go south on I25 to Socorro, turn west on Highway 60 and it was on the right on the way out of town. The challenge with this one was that the owner was rarely around
Have fun

Found a few yards like that in Pueblo, CO but the owners wouldn't sell anything. Thanks for the Socorro heads up. I'm planning on taking a course there in April. When I get sent to these schools I try to find yards, me being a Yankee from NY must get their guard up. Damn Yankees.
It seems Urban sprawl has taken it's toll on salvage yards.

The Broadway wrecking yards are still there. I didn't really have much luck with them though. My boss found a bunch of parts for his Jag there recently though so I need to check them out again. There is a yard out East in Clovis that is huge and very reasonable. I picked up a 455/TH-400 for $200. They have an entire section for old cars but I didn't see anything older than '60s. It's a bit of a drive but you can call them if you know what you are looking for.

I can call a bunch of them ahead of time and see if they have any 61 thru 64 fullsize Olds .
With any luck , some of my time at the OCA convention will be spent "junkyarding" .

Another quick note - North 54 in Alamagordo used to be a gold mine. The owner was a little pricey but would allow you to wander the yard. He had a line of used cars for sale out in front that included a '69 Buick GS 400. I'll bet that car sat there for close to twenty years. It might still be there
