"It's rare, worth millions, and none like it anywhere, anymore..." except all over
"It's rare, worth millions, and none like it anywhere, anymore..." except all over
I'm just wondering why, after all this time with forums, ebay, and just anywhere on the internet at our disposal, do we continue to see consistent examples of cars and/or parts being overprice and discribed as "rare", when they are not, or accused of asking ridiculous amounts for others when we all know its a fair price?
I know there is a sucker born every minute, or one man's junk is another's treasure, etc... but aren't we all suppose to be on the same team here?
Why do we feel the need to try and see if you can get $11,000 for a rusted out 4 door b-body or buy someone elses extra parts for less than the scrap prices are? LOL
I know there is a million reasons, but it's a topic I felt I needed to get off my chest. I mean if we truly love these cars so much, can't we be straight with each other without trying to belittle or insult each others opinions?
I know many of us are straight forward and very polite, but we know there are a few that fit this, besides the random NWaA (newbie-with-an-agenda) that is.

Some people buy a 20 year old car and don't see anything else like it on the road, don't bother looking on internet fourms, or even the newspaper, but think it's rare because they don't see it on the street anymore
Some of the adds I see on CL make me laugh. There was a guy in NJ selling a Delta 88 with 85,000 miles on it for $15,000. So the guy has a car that he hasn't driven that much for the past 30 years and expects to get what he paid for it back in the day

We used to have a running joke around the shop that, no matter what it was, it was "previously owned by Elvis", lol! Some of my favorite super rare cars would be the Chrysler K convertible w/ the wood grain sides, the Ford Fiesta, and of course the incredibly rare 82 Chevy Citation, lol!
We have auction houses and reality TV to thank for this phenomenon. Auction prices have always affected collector car prices, remember the first "million dollar Duesenberg" and the first muscle car bubble of the late 90s. But that only affected a few rich collectors with the rare cars. Reality TV expanded this to anyone with a TV set and an old junker sitting out back. Add to that the enormous industry of restoration shops and parts sellers creating the TV "buy, fix, and flip" shows to showcase their products and its not surprising that some folks get very greedy. In the end people who really know cars also know the difference between fair price and ripoff, there is just more to sort through than there used to be.
What is equally disturbing is the need for every other add to contain the complete bio on a particular car. I am not talking about the individual history of the car. The add typically starts off like The GTO was the brain child of Jim Wangers who in 1964......blah, blah, blah.
Flipside was seen recently when a rare '66 $30 sold for "peanuts".
What I don't get is someone doesn't like a car for sale, or the asking price, why come here and start a thread about it? A high percentage of threads on this site are just about that. The asking price is too high. Its not in perfect shape. Its nothing special. Mine's nicer. The valve covers are on backwards. Seller is a jerk. Etc etc. Asking for too much money when selling something is an exercise in first amendment rights. More importantly, its a huge waste of time as well (ask any realtor). Same goes for complaining about the price, or picking something apart when you have no intention of buying it.

I hear that among other non-educational threads.
many people on here could stand to be a little nicer.

You see it on Craigslist all the time! It doesn't matter what you're looking to buy. Everyone thinks their item is worth big bucks but when it comes time for that same person to buy an item, they think you're asking too much and try to talk you down on price!
Whats my car worth?
I agree with the comments, but, some of us do not know what our car is REALISTICALLY worth. Like me! I would like to know your opinions since I have decided to sell.
It is a 1968 Cutlass 'S' Convertible, 350 cu.in., original condition. It's in pretty good shape and has 68,000 miles. A/C does not work.(no big deal here because it got down to 38 degrees last night) Other than that everything else is in good shape.
Several pictures are available via e-mail since I can't upload to this site very easily. My e-mail address is wyogf45@gmail.com for any inquiries or photo requests.
Thanks for any information/help to figure out what this car is worth.

What burns my *** is when people trash someones car that they spent a lot of time customizing so what that it has neon lime paint or lambo doors if your not interested in buying it dont trash it...no one says crap about your fake resale red w30...
The fake red w30 is just anexample, i am not trashing anyone with such a car

My take is this:
We are a very small subset.
Most of my stuff would never be allowed near a Barrett Jackson auction (4 doors, wrong engines, rattle can paint) - but I'm routinely asked by people who are genuinely interested (but not car "educated") - as to the value of my "20 footer". Most are blown away that my '55 4 door sedan could be had for $3500 on most days...they have a perception that Old = Expensive.
So, combine this with the aforementioned auction sites and "reality" shows, and you have a majority of the population - some of which have disposable income - that have no clue. And out of that bigger subset, a handful might want an "Old" car - so, someone on CL or ebay with an "Old" car and a mind for marketing (for right or for wrong) - lures them in.
And it works. Love it or hate it, it's capitalism.
Personally, I'd sell my 4 door for $300 if I knew the person was going to keep it alive vs $3500 for someone to "Drop a Chevy small block" in it - but that's me (and probably most of us).
Just my humble opinion.

I have to admit I sold my Cutlass this summer. I intentionally didn't put it on here because I didn't want to read all of the comments. I like this site and there are a lot of very knowledgeable and nice people here. But just like everything else a few can ruin it for the many
