I have someone interested in purchasing a car I have for sale. He lives in Canada. What is the process of importing a car to Canada? Or should I say exporting a car to Canada?
What has helped? what to be careful of?

Bill of sale & title needed to bring into Canada. Copies of these must be at the border crossing of delivery 72 hours prior to the actual import. The originals must accompany the car. Both US & Canadian border agents will be looking at paperwork & the vehicle.

There is some other paperwork like the AES form. All of this is on the Canada border services website. Again it is an easy form to fill out & wont preclude a sale if the buyer is willing to do the paperwork.
Oh was not planning on just dropping it. That is why I am asking. Actually I would prefer to take it to close to the border and have him deal with what ever he has to. I do understand the US Customs now requires a form that so far I can't seem to find a link to that works. But, have an email sent to the US Customs for assistance. He is speaking with a broker that handles this kind of transfer as well. So that may be the answer for us all. Their fee seems small to handle it all.

Yea I am thinking a broker is best too. But, as a US citizen there is a form I have to file apparently. Having a problem finding it. Will call US Customs this am.
Yes it is the TC but not a done deal as of yet so will give details when done. If he comes through. I never count one sold till I have the money. And so far no money.

OK I just picked up my 62 Starfire and exported/imported it to Canada, picked it up in Az.
You will need to file for a AES ITN number with Homeland Security before even thinking about shipping the car. I crossed at the Lewiston bridge ( only place in north west NY to cross) They require bill of sale and title and require 72 hours to clear it. I had to give them through a broker as I don't have a US address and give them a copy of my passport and SIN number.
After you receive your ITN number you have to file with the Border at the crossing you plan on using. They require another 72 hours and will want title and bill of sale with the ITN number from homeland. You will also have to inform them of which day you plan on crossing, not before or after but that day. The car will be inspected by the Border people and the VIN will have to be readable. The Canadian side will inspect the car and they need the same paperwork , bill of sale and title, they also have a form to fill out requiring date of manufacture and plant by city and state. The bill of sale is what they tax you on plus a hundred for air tax. Then they check to see what it is worth and if they think it is worth more they charge you and tax you more. Make sure the bill is for what it would sell for on E-Bay. I was at the American side for a half hour then spent 2 and a half on the Canadian side. Take all e mails and pictures with you the government will check them, I had every paper including the e mails from the broker to help clear the car.
If you have any questions that I haven't covered let me know, I cleared my car on Monday the 26th.
