Idling problem

Idling problem
I have a 71 Supreme and it runs great, for the most part. The problem I am seeing is that when it idles for a long time (5-15 minutes), the engine kills when I put it in drive. I put it back in park and it immediately starts up again. Put it in drive, or reverse, and the engine dies. It will restart right back up again without hesitation. If I turn the key and put it in neutral and start it without using the brake, I can go, but it will kill when I put the brake on. If I can get it going in drive without stopping for a while, it then returns to normal.
I do not see this problem with day to day driving, just when I stop to talk to someone and the car idles in park for a longer period of time.
Someone at work suggested the neutral safety switch. Anyone out there with any suggestions, or have come across this before?
