id my rear

this was in my 72 Cutlass S
m stamped on the pumpkin
Is this a 8.5 10 bolt o type axle that would be correct to put into my 71 w30?
Just by the count method, it is a 3.42 gear limited slip...
thanks for the help!

more details

Yes that is an 8.5" housing. However you do not show the shock mounts. Make sure that this is 71-72 style not 73 & up. 73 has shock mounts on opposite side of housing & is wider.

What is the code on the axle tube?. It might be 3.42 now but it likely was not originally.

Fyi

That is a 71-72 8.5" housing as the shock mounts are rearward of the axle.

Be sure to pull the cover to confirm gears. 3.23 & 3.42 spin about the same.

Good luck. Either a 3.23 or a 3.42 posi is very nice rear for your project.
