I got scammed

A heads up for here and I posted on v8Buick where they booted him (Jean88) out after I posted.

Not on here but on the Turbo Buick forum. I feel so stupid and embarrassed that I fell for this, and it's not even the money it's that I should know better.
I posted on Saturday in parts wanted for a set of vector wheels adapters for center caps. On Sunday I had a couple of posts on where to find them and one pm from a member Jean88. He sent me a name and phone # of a person he dealt with in the past that had these and other nice parts. I called and left a message, he later replied in a text. He said he had a like new set for $145 shipped. That's a decent price so I'm like great how do you want payment, PayPal, money order, Venmo? he replied Zelle.

So a couple of red flags already, but it hadn't really hit me yet. One I knew the lead was from a new member, but so am I. Two I thought it was a little odd he texted, but everyone does these days, and three, Zelle?

Now I've been on this forum for just under 20 years and have never been scammed, and I'm in the mind set that it's members helping members right? I didn't even think to ask for pics because they're aluminum rings.

Anyway I Zelle the money to what seems to be his wife's (who I'm texting now) email account. So most probably it's really just one person that scammed me not three people. Now here's where I probably should have slapped myself. Rebecca asked me for a screen shot of the transaction, which my dumbass did, and I should know that they get confirmation of it anyway. She said some BS about shipping it out right away. She says she'll send me tracking and confirmation.

Nothing Monday, Tuesday morning I get the text that they need another $55, something about it was his wife's late Dads parts and quoted me the wrong price, apologies and says he would refund the money if I wasn't happy. I said ok refund me because I can get them cheaper. Then he says I have them boxed and shipped could at least give him another $25 to a different email to cover shipping. Obviously I'm already screwed out of the $145 and this has scam written all over it.

So, if I had done a little research on Sunday morning on the forum I would have seen a post on scammer Jean88, lesson learned even at 66.

I hope you at least changed your Zelle password. You should also contact the bank to which the Zelle account is attached. I don't know what information was in the screenshot.
One of the attractions of those types of payments is the instant notification(s) to both parties. They don't need a screenshot; their app will 'ding'.

Technology has changed this world and along with the good of course comes the bad. Scammers prey on trusting people and it just causes people to loose faith in mankind. I would have no mercy on such people. Dont feel embarrassed because its rampant and your not the only one these days. You really have to question everything.

Not to dash salt into your wound, but there has been a lot of publicity concerning Zelle and scams lately. I don't understand why Zelle is so much more likely to be prone to scams, but that seems to be the case.

As painful as your experience with this sale has been, thank-you for sharing it with us. It certainly will help someone else down the road.

I think someone here tried to scam me, but not sure. The user, (bruceh) just joined, has ZERO posts, then PM'd me about the G-body rear trim umbrella clips I have for sale and wanted to know if I still had some.

Afternoon Sir, wondering if you have any 3066259 clips left. Thanks Bruce.
My reply-

A few. These are genuine GM clips, not those cheesy aftermarket ones.

$45.00 USD shipped for a set of 8 to a U.S.A. address with personal check or USPS Money order. Sorry, no Paypal or any of the pay site stuff. I'm not interested in dealing with 1099K's next year.

This is strange. You haven't even posted your first post on the forums and you're asking me to sell you parts. Color me wary. Nothing personal, it's just, well, I don't know you from Adam.

Send me your mailing address and which method you plan to pay with if you're interested and then we'll go from there.

Thanks.
That was October 1. Haven't heard from him since, and he hasn't posted a single post anywhere else. Not sure if he's a "real" Olds guy, a scammer, or just trying to get into my bank account or something.

Unfortunately, the mice are always testing and finding ways to beat the mousetraps. And as some find out, it's not always the "newbies" that can scam you. I've been taken twice for some low-dollar stuff, once by a Hemming's News scammer (pre-internets) on a pair of 71-72 sport mirrors for $40, and once buying something from a guy on another forum for $35, but it still makes you pissed when scammers do it to you. Be careful out there.

Had a guy from Texas try to scam me about 25 years ago on ebay. Back in the day when you could do alternate payments, I sent him a postal money order for a cruise lever and he never would send the part. After about 2 months or so of back and forth with that *******, I put in a mail fraud claim on his *** after confirming he cashed the money order. I also told his local police as to what he was doing and I would gladly drive to Texas and file charges personally, all of a sudden it seemed like a miracle within 2 weeks I got a refund postal money order AND he sent the part with an apology letter.

Found out the police AND a postal agent contacted him, and it wasn't his first go-round trying to scam people. He was kinda upset with me about that. I got a letter from the Postal Inspector's office a couple weeks after that stating the outcome. Maybe they scared him, I dunno. But I got my part for free. Sometimes, although rarely, you win.

What ever happened to the guy that got scammed, even with the Life Lock (scam)?

It was the CEO of LifeLock Todd Davis and he set himself up for it.

Yes I did contact the bank and they assured me my account is safe.

Once you Zelle the money and confirmation is complete there is no way to reverse it, it is final and very difficult to trace. Zelle is best for family and people you trust. PayPal is harder to scam.

Sounds like it won’t be around for long I would think.
