how to wire up distributor
how to wire up distributor
so i finally droped my 350 in and wired everything up. but i belive i wired up my distributor. does anybody have a wiring diagram for spark plugs from distributor to spark plugs
Seems like we might have gone over this before.
First you have to bring the engine to TDC compression stroke.
Be sure it is not TDC for #6 to fire and #1 between intake and exhaust.
There are various ways to do this, per prior discussion.
Then you see where the rotor is pointing, which will depend on where it ended up when it was installed. There is a preferred location, pointing to #1 cylinder for pts ignition, or pointing about at the driver for HEI, but it really does not much matter.
Wherever it points is where you put the #1 plug wire.
Following the firing order, which is provided on the intake, proceed around the distributor in the correct direction.
The FO is 18436572
the proper direction is CCW as viewed from above.
the cylinders are also numbered on the factory intake, and are 1357 down the LH [driver's] side, and 2468 down the RH [passenger] side.

Well, actually, he CAN go wrong with just that picture, if the distributor was installed with #1 in any position other than that shown.
Whereas, my description says to use for the #1 plug, whatever tower the rotor is pointing at when the #1 cylinder is ready to fire.
Oh, dear God, it requires learning one of the 2 or three super simple methods of discerning TDC compression from TDC intake/exhaust. However, people a lot less intelligent than any of us here have managed this task, so it can be done.

[QUOTE=MDchanic;686874]He can also go wrong if he has a Chebby 307, since that picture implies that it covers that engine as well, when it most assuredly does not.
Yes but he did post he had a 350 in it I myself would have assumed the distributer was in correctly therefore no need to bring #1 up and check rotor position. So lets say a picture can get you close

The firing order and distributor location are the same, but the direction of the distributor is different.

Aaaaand... pre-HEI igns placed the #1 post towards the #1 cylinder.
And, assuming the dist'r is currently installed per that diagram is a recipe for disaster
Don't assume- verify, and do the process exactly once and exactly right.

Yet another example of why it's a bad idea to resurrect a thread that's been dead for nearly ten year vs starting one's own. This post you're responding to is part of the resurrected thread from 2014 vs the new post that revived it.
And again you are also commenting on a post from 2014, not the current question in this revived thread. Unfortunately people don't take the time to read all the way to the bottom of a thread when a new post pops up.
