How to stuff two 17" electric fans into a 68 cutlass
So I have two 17" electric fans that I'm going to use to upgrade my cooling system. My car is a 68 olds cutlass convertible with a transplant 455 and 2004R trans. I'm hoping this upgrade keeps the car cool in traffic with ambient temps in the 90's.
I've already upgraded the alternator and installed relays to power the fans. One fan is controlled by a thermostat, the other via a switch hidden in the ash tray compartment.
The fans are running 'pusher', from the front, and installed in the cavity between the radiator and the front grill. I started by making a custom frame with 1/8" thick angle iron from home cheepo.
I used a cardboard template to help with the custom frame.

With the fans installed, there is only about 1/2" clearance between the one part of the fan and the headlight housing. On the engine compartment side, I mounted the fans flush with the radiator core support assembly. The fans do overhang the radiator tank area on each side of the radiator core, but I didn't think it mattered.
After complete installation, the radiator core is about 2" from the face of the fan assembly. For good measure, I also installed a coolant overflow bottle. I used an aluminum radiator from ECP with 2" core tubes. I won't know till summer if I've accomplished my objective. The 17" fans were from summit.
I've got a stock-ish 70 455 w/o A/C. In 100 degree temps with a single core radiator and 6 blade clutch fan with shroud it never goes over 190. My timing is around 8 degrees
What's your reason for going with the fans?

My temp gage ran up to 220 degrees on days in the upper 80's when I got stopped in traffic. I know this isn't excessive but it always made me nervous driving the car on hot days. I'm also being extra cautious trying to keep my transmission cool. My 455 has a more agressive cam installed by a prior owner. I'm not sure of the specs. I also run 8 degrees of initial timing. I'm hoping my gage stays at 190 now too.
