Iirc Brian once said he uses 2x6 lumber to make a box for each head.

FedEx is usually a good option for shipping

Doing that today. I just take a sheet of cardboard, and wrap them. It's about the best way.Roll the head in the cardboard at least twice,to get a few layers, then cut, fold, and tape the ends. Solid bricks.
I use 2x10 lumber to make boxes to ship cranks.

I also used wood, but I use light ply wood, and blocks on the end to fasten the plywood. Fed EX them. They will take up to 125 pounds, and must mark box heavy. Cost as much to ship as the heads cost.

If you have a fastenall nearby, and your recipient has one- give them a call and ask about "3rd party logistics" basically they will haul your stuff by truck across the country to any other fastenall location. Supposed to be cheap. I haven't tried it yet, but will be soon.

You beat me to it

I'll bet you can ship them through Fastenal 3PL cheaper than that.

I've used them and they're very reasonable

I just shipped a 310 lb box that was 62"x28"x20" from upstate NY to the Dallas area for $130. Maybe they're just better for larger, heavier items

Maybe or just might be my local office does not like to mess with it. Both times they act like it was extra work for them that they didn't really want to do. Last time I tried it was a complete front clip disassembled and nicely crated on a 4 x 6 skid. They quoted me over $300.00 and I was able to ship it GA for $160.00 using truck freight.

You don't quote through the corp office?

I've used them several times and was very very happy with the price.

Open your own Fed X(which i prefer) account or UPS>>Takes a couple minutes, but a cheaper rate than if you were to take to a UPS or Fed X Shipping Store and have them process it for you. They like to tag on more $$ also.
Go to fed x website or UPS for that matter and use their rates and transit times to calulate freight to compare .Need to know dims and weight of each box before you do that.Pack in heavy boxes and someone said to roll up in cardboard which is a good idea and use some bubble wrap around that.Make sure you insure each box for it's value to be safe and make a note of what is in each box in the reference line area when doing online. I Manage a Distribution Warehouse for a living and this is Exactly how i would go about it.

What he said
Make a FedEx acct, it's easy and beneficial

How much are the heads worth? 2A heads, wrap in cardboard.

fresh new D, F, or H heads... build a damn sturdy wooden box, wrap that in an inch of house insulating foam board, and wrap THAT in cardboard.

I have had the shipper drop and BREAK a cylinder head [Pontiac with a thin part- landed right on a sharp corner where that thin part was]. Insure to suit your needs. Bear in mind that if they break/lose ONE they will pay for ONE, and the buyer probably won't want just ONE, unless it's rare.

I had a UPS account, then got a FedEx account. FedEx has always been cheaper for me,and I haven't had any issues with damaged packages. A few times with UPS and the runaround that followed was enough.
A bare head,wrapped in cardboard,will weigh about 55lbs.
An assembled head, wrapped in cardboard, will be about 65lbs.

I shipped a set of Mopar heads recently by UpS. Built a nice wooden crate for each one. They would not accept because the were not in a cardboard box I took them home and wrapped the crate in cardboard and tape and the same guy took them no problem
