Is there a trick to removing trim ring off of wheel without damaging trim?

Don't be afraid and use a tire iron. It will come off.

 

Yeah, just pry it off. This was common practice when these cars were new and folks pried them off all the time. Pry a little at one spot then the work your way around the wheel, the trim ring will lift up as you go around. Be aware that the retaining tabs will likely scratch the wheel paint but that's completely unavoidable and isn't visible when the ring is installed.
