How Do You Remove Old Weatherstripping

I am replacing the old weatherstripping on my 69 Cutlass convertible. I know you can buy 3M release agent for $20 for one aresol can to remove the old adhesive but I don't want to buy a pay that much. Does anyone know of anything else that will remove the old weatherstripping and adhesive from arount the doors, etc without hurting the paint underneath.

Thanks,
Doug

Try some Zippo lighter fluid on a scrap fender or something, I don't know what naptha does to finished/cured paint, but I know it takes adhesives off really well. I use it for taking stickers off of glass, and excess glue on countertops

You could always cut it off and then use mildly abrasive sand paper to sand the last of it off. Of course, that would damage the paint underneath but you are supposed to sand a surface before applying an adherent like weatherstripping glue.

It is turning out that most of the weatherstrip is held on by little nylon barbed fastners. The only weatherstrip I think is on with adhesive is the weatherstrip on the windshield posts so this may not be to bad of a project.
