How do certain things affect valuation of a 442?

Point in case, I'm looking at a really nice 1966 442 that is frame off fully restored but had the exterior color changed from Red to Turquoise Mist and it has a White interior (matches cowl tag). Also, it has a 455 engine with the tri-carb setup (not factory or dealer installed and no fuel bowl). Car is a 4-speed with original window sticker. How does the color change and engine difference affect the price of the car over one that is original color and engine?

At the risk of being pedantic, it's a "case in point". IMO, if both the paint job and engine installation are/were done with the utmost of care w/ good detail, it would add value to a 78 yr. old 442.

Depends on the buyer and what he likes. I am somewhat a purist so I would say the changes over stock are a detriment to value.

Usually, properly done color changes to a color that was available that year won't affect value, nor will points be deducted in judging. The other stuff is up to the buyer. Resto-mods are trending higher than some correct cars at the big name auctions (and yeah, those don't necessarily reflect the real world). Bottom line is what do you want? If your reason for buying a car is resale value, you're doing it wrong.

Do you like the car, the color and drive train? If yes, then negotiate a price you’re willing to pay and see where it goes. Frame off or not 66-67 cars just don’t seem to bring the money of th 69-70-71..

Exactly.

I believe the only model that would rule out that scenario is a W30. Unless the potential buyer is clueless and believes all 442 are the same. Have been watching sales patterns for quite some time. Sounds like an Olds guy put together their dream car, or set it up for maximum sales interest. With a common Olds wishlist. Most want a 455, most are intrigued by a six pack. If the color was an available option, and it's a 5V car or otherwise verifiable it's a wash. There is an absolute market for the way its setup. Likely much bigger than the purist market. Many casuals believe 442s are not complete without 455s. It doesn't matter that the original 400 is a better engine. The 455 is thee big bad powerhouse as far as they are concerned.

I saw Craig Jackson interviewed and he talked about how restomods were actually bringing better prices that most restored cars in most cases. I would not call a color change and installing a 455 a total restomod. If I like the car it would not bother me.
