Houston Raceway Park - February 10, 2012
All Houston area Oldsmobile guys...I will be heading down to Royal Purple Raceway in Baytown on Friday, February 10, 2012 for street night. I am bringing my '72 Supreme for the first pass down the track since the new engine install. Any and all that would like to come are welcome...send me a pm if you're interested and I'll give you my contact information so we can link up once we get out there. Lets show the Chevy / Ford guys what torque really is!!!

Times aren't even worth posting...the stock fuel pump is extremely insufficient for this build. The car is nosing over going into 2nd gear and never catches up. Turning off the track and heading back into pits car has a hung idle to 1800 RPM's. Will be installing an electric fuel pump setup and heading back out.

sorry to hear about that. I dunno if you got any good industrial areas but thats usually where i do some tuning. I will go into the shop tune head out and find the most secluded street and let rip. Some might find this stupid but it saves me a trip to the track if something is wrong .

60' was 1.855 on the fastest run, but the car was consistent. I didn't expect much out of the 60' as I have 3.42 gears and was using 27" tall slicks. I just need more fuel after the first 60' or so. Once the bowls are depleted the pump plays catch up the rest of the way down the track.

What was the fastest time. We have all had some bad times before. I remember one time i forgot to connect a spark plug wire when i was cheking the plugs i ran 17 sec time lol. Then there was the time i thought i would hook on the t/a radials and ran 18 sec time lol . There is no shame in your times imo you are still tuning .

I'll do the fuel pump and take it back...no sense posting numbers up that don't match what the engine made on the dyno. I've got a date with DaVinci and LeeA soon, we'll get some of the bugs worked out.

Electric pump will be on it's way soon

Closer to the tank the better, most electric pumps work better pushing than pulling. IIRC A fuel pressure regulator will solve a lot of issues before they are in fact issues with an aftermarket fuel pump and would be a great investment.

For some perspective:
PS: Thanks Lee, I didn't know SS was taking pictures that night because RPR had their own photographers out there. I'm glad you brought it to my attention, I have a print of the first photo...now I need to order one of the latest

Show us your timeslip
Hi mate, come on pilot give us a timeslip, after all drag racing is all about setting personal bests an getting quicker each time you go out so you need a baseline to work with. As you know our cars are virtually identical so should run close numbers. I am using a Holley black pump running through the stock 3/8 line and regulated to 6lbs if thats any help and this returns me 11.83@112mph with a 1.64 60ft. Good luck next time out. By the way did you get any more info re front springs, cheers, Paul.Picture 018.jpg

Once Steve actually makes a FULL pass down the track, without the engine falling flat on it's face, he'll probably post what the car REALLY runs, along with what it did on it's maiden voyage
VERY few cars run even close to their potential on their first time to the track.

DPP07DA0501140E36[2].jpgOk, it was just a gentle ribbing, I look forward to the next race report and am sure it will run well, I reckon mid 11's @ 115, good luck pilot keep us posted.

Thanks Lee, I couldn't have said it better myself. I don't mind giving a baseline for what the motor can do, but I don't consider starving it of fuel and tearing azz down the track a baseline. As far as the springs Paul, I haven't looked into it yet because I've got this fuel issue to deal with first.
I did weigh the car, it was 3750lbs with me in it (I'm 240lbs). I'll let you know when I find out about springs. For now, I'm trading the oversize Hellwig sway bar over to my newly acquired (today) '72 Convertible and then taking the stock one from the convertible to put on the grey car. That ought to loosen the front end a little bit.

Good stuff mate, good luck next time out and Iburnout winner.jpg am sure you will see a timeslip with 11. something on it ! The car looks good too, makes me want to ditch my cowl induction hood for a proper ram air, I take it you don't have any engine clearance problems, think I might with the Torker, 1" spacer and 4" KandN filter.

And thanks for your words of encouragement...for now, I just want the car to get the proper fuel...I think the suspension will prevent us from getting into the 11's for now. It's all gonna happen, just one thing at a time...unless the tax man would hurry up lol!

You did, you did! I had an opportunity to help my sister out and I jumped on it. She bought this car with my dad a few years back and did a few minor things to it (seat covers, carpet, top, front end) but other than that it is an all original beauty. I already have a 455 in the machine shop getting a touch up, but it will be mostly stock with a decent cam. I want to retain the parade car ability so we won't be doing anything radical to it. It just needs more power than the stock 2bbl 350 puts out and since I have a 455 laying around it makes sense to use it. Beside, we've got the grey car sitting in the garage if we need to feel some speed.
Long story short and without getting into details, at $5500 I think I got a steal of a deal...

Joe, thanks! It is gonna get the 455 but I don't know if it's going to get 3.42's. Maybe 3.08, it's going to stay a parade car like it has been. It's been in the Austin Veteran's Day parade for the last 4 years.
Tom, you are welcome to it...trade even for one 1969 Hurst Olds?

Newbie to the hobby & Old. Man I wish I had seen this a few weeks ago... I would have been there in a heartbeat. Your car is beautiful.
Maybe I can convince you to bring your car to Otto's here in Sugar Land some Sat evening.

For any that are interested...I did not post the times from this trip because I was disappointed with the car's performance. As it turns out we have a culprit for why we ran 12.731 at 105...see below. In hindsight...7 cylinders running 12.731 isn't too too bad...
