Hot August Nights

Hot August Nights
I have been thinking about attending Hot August Nights this year as they are accepting cars up to the mid-seventies. My '74 would be fun to show at a larger venue. I have never been there and the photo's I have seen look nuts! What should I expect and does anyone have advise for a first timer?

First I would make sure you have a place to stay. I'm thinking that all the local rooms are pretty much taken by now. Hopefully you know someone who lives there and you can stay with them.
There are a number of different shows going on at the same time, day and night. Hotel parking lots have shows, downtown Reno has shows, I've never been out to Sparks during the HAN timeframe but I highly suspect there are shows all over there as well.
One thing I enjoyed the last time I was there was going to the auto auction. I just bought a spectator ticket but that allowed me to watch the auction and go through where all the cars are to get a close look at them.
It is a fun time!

GO, it will be the best show you will see, as they have everything from Rat Rods to Muscle Cars and everything in between!
You won't get on the "show fields" at any of the 6 Casinos, other then the ones downtown, as it is way too late to get a spot. There are only 6,000 registered openings. I had to wait 2 years before I could get on the list!
The people who put on this event are the greatest par none, very helpful and easy to deal with. All proceeds go to a charity. They even had people walking around sweeping up trash on the ground in the show car field area at each casino! Plus free concerts at night, at most of the casinos.
BTW: About 2 months after Hot August Nights it was published in a local newspaper in Reno that stated that the casinos made 1.3 BILLION dollars during that week!
I raked in the awards for "Best of Show, Muscle Car" at three different casinos, three nights in a row, plus I won the "kick off show" on the Sunday before it all started and the "Best Restored Stock Car Award", on Friday in Sparks, with 438 cars entered.
They estimated that there where about 8,000 to 10,000 cars on side streets, as only registered cars could be on the show field.

Definitely one of the best West Coast shows .
Exactly what Randy and Dave said . And , with that being said , you are potentially driving ? , from Phoenix to Reno ?
That would be an exceptionally warm experience in mid August .
My friends from Phoenix ( where I live also ) always trailer to that show . And , even with very nice and new tow rigs , usually travel with 2 - 3 other vehicles . The benefit to that is that you have a few other kindred spirits to hang out with , and share coolers - tents - snacks - watch your stuff when you are not there .
It would be exceptionally cool to see a 74 Hurst Indy Pace Car Delta convert at this show . Running into another one would be extremely rare . And , you would make some new fans .
For me , this show is on my radar . And , as with most take over the entire city , hot rods , music , food , night life experiences , it is the people that make a difference . Dave did a great thread 2 years ago when he DID the show , keep us posted if you go..
Cheers , Jim Tuma
