Spotted this on the marketplace hoping someone can identify the hood styling. Hoping to have it fit on a 1970 cutlass S. Is this a 72 hood or not? I’m looking to replace my original double hump on my vehicle. Body work is quoted higher than id like so far.
Oldsmobile made roughly 150,000 base Cutlass and S cars in 1970 so there's a hood out there somewhere. You can use a Supreme hood in a pinch.
I'm guessing your S got whacked in the front and whoever repaired it used whatever they could find the cheapest to fix it. You'll probably find some jacked-up metalwork under all that body filler.
Check with Larry Camuso www.larrycamuso.com. He's in San Jose and has dealt in quality Olds sheetmetal for many years. He'll also know what will interchange for your car, though you are pretty much limited to 1970 on a hood.

Yes it is, but I'm still struggling with why people think these are worth so much. Doesn't EVERYONE have one laying against the wall in the garage after they put a repro O.A.I. hood on their car?

Last one I bought was $50, surface rust in a few spots, all trim intact and in good shape
When you’re selling nobody’s buying. When you’re buying nobody’s selling. And even at $50 unless you’re local its a huge shipping bill. Grateful when I found a nice one for $200. Actually found 2, sold the second for the same $200. And sold my perfect flat supreme/vista hood for $200.
Saying they’re only worth $50 is cute, but isn’t based on reality.

If cash changes hands, that's reality. One data point obviously isn't a statistically valid sample size to set value, but ASKING prices never do.
Hoods are the next easiest thing to sporty-up a car after wheels. I think we've been too permissive in the hobby with "it's your car, do what you want" and the enabling from the repro part houses selling anyone anything, so we end up with a repro OAI hood on a 2 barrel car.
I think it's a mark of maturity to say "You know, I don't have a 442, I can't afford a 442, or my wife won't let me spend that kind of money; I'm going to have a base Cutlass, and have fun with it, and that will be good enough, and I'm not going to bolt on poseur accessories to try to make it look like something it's not."

Actually, the irony of the "it's your car, do what you want" thing it that apparently what these rugged individualists want is to look just like every other Faux Four Two out there.

I never really got the 442 affliction that some have. When I was growing up, many folks swapped a 455 into their Cutlass, installed lower rear gears, and could (and did) shame factory 442s on the street and on the strip. So with that as my baseline, having a 442 was never something that I considered special.

From how available the aftermarket OAI hoods are online compared to the double hump. Everyone SHOULD have one 😂

thanks for the info. Scrolled up and realized I quoted you but my remarks never went through. Definitely thanks for the help. Checked Larry’s site and nothing in his parts section would be a 1970 cutlass hood. Definitely gonna keep looking on his site though.

ideally what I’m looking for. A bit of surface rust. Going to be trying to learn how to metalwork these old cars like old Winfield. Maybe this fucked up hood can make a comeback DIY

I can’t say as a young guy that I saw the hood and I was like damn that looks ******* cool but then I saw that it wasn’t necessarily made for my car being a cutlass S. And originality of the body is really important I mean it’s still a cutlass and the body lines are so damn sweet already especially with the double hump original hood. It still has the muscle look And it’s still a nice ride. It’s not a 442 and I’m perfectly fine with that but since so many people want a 442 there better be a hood somewhere.

damn that’s crazy. People keep telling me throw an LS in it but I’m just like ROCKET 350 BABY.
purchased with 16000 miles and now it’s got 20. Project car for sure.

would love to see a base cutlass with a 455 in it. 442 killer

Very true!!
People’s ask me all the time why I didn’t put the OAI hood or wing on my car. I March to the best of a different drum. If I wanted to “fit in” I would have LS swapped the car, put the hood and wing on, or the huge wagon wheel rims everyone has now.
It’s kinda sad the easiest way to stand out is to leave the stock hood on.
