High millage oil... What is the difference?

I stopped in to at a Quick lube( for a you know) a quick oil and filter change. I was in hurry( late for breakfast next door) and just told the guy to put in it what was on the tag and I would be back in a hour or so to pick it up.This is a new to me car high millage but fine running car.,no excessive oil consumption at all. When I went to pick it up I noticed the bill was almost $50 bucks! I was expecting somewhere around $35-40 and when I asked about it he said the oil in it before according to the tag was high millage oil and that is what they put in it, my mistake for not taking care of business.

The question is what does high millage oil bring to this that regular oil would not have done.... Tedd

I would assume that there is some additives that help swell seals and gaskets to stop leakage.

A higher price tag.

The HM stuff supposedly has some seal swellers but I think it's strictly a marketing campaign, designed to get more cash from an owner they can get to buy into it.

Local Jiffy Lube keeps trying to persuade me to go with Pennzoil Super Synthetic Hi-Mileage in my F150. And I keep telling them to put the Formula Shell in for less than half the cost. Then they try the upgrade angle on how the Pennzoil is such a better oil, for people who really care about their engines. I care about the truck (I rely on it to take me 70 miles round trip to work everyday) but with 210K and oil consumption of 1 qt/1200 miles, I see no need to put that in there- unless of course you can guarantee in writing oil consumption goes to less than 1 qt/ 3K miles.

And then is when I tell them I've personally torn down engines run on all different grades and brands of oil, and internal condition was invariably a factor of oil change intervals and driving habits more than oil stock.

Oh, you didn't think the old guy in the driving cap knew anything about cars? I made one of their high-pressure lady salespeople ask another writer to finish my sale before I finished with her...

More profit for the shop and oil company...

Even if you believe the seal-swelling additives, that is only a short-term fix. These additives soften the seals in order to swell them, meaning that they will now wear out even faster.

Danger, Will Robinson.
