Helpin' an Olds Brother out
Helpin' an Olds Brother out
My work took me up to Santa Fe today and as I was leaving I found myself on an obscure road I have never traveled before and ran smack dab into an Oldsmobile stranded literally in the middle of the road. I just couldn't let him stay there without at least trying to help. I pulled over and found there were already two others that had stopped but nobody was looking under the hood. The driver was cranking the engine and I could smell the gas so I right away guessed an ignition problem. The "lookie loo's" were saying it wasn't getting any fuel so I had to go through the motions of checking. Looked down the air horn and it squirted fuel alright. I started feeling around the MSD module and the HEI distributor for any noticeable problems but didn't find anything. Made sure the connector was tight in the dist. cap, pulled a plug wire and told the driver to crank it over to see if it had spark. I saw fire from the plug wire and by the time I had it back on, the engine started. It sounded nice too! No idea what the problem was or what fixed it. It was a 455 with headers, Edelbrock carb, aftermarket intake(I'm guessing Edelbrock to go with the carb and air cleaner), and a nice sounding cam. I learned that the old guy driving had been in a bad motorcycle wreck several years ago and has some lingering health issues so I'm glad I stopped and was able to help.
I haven't fixed a car on the side of the road like that since probably High School.
Some of you will be able to tell more about it just from a couple of pics than I did fixing it, but it was a nice looking 442.

Don't know about the HEI, but on another makers electronic ignition, (70s), I saw many that didn't start and when checking for fire and grounding a plug wire they would then start. Replace ign. module and no more trouble. Never understood why.
I have three sisters, a wife, and a mom and I like to think that in some small way my helping others will provide them with some goodwill.
