Help wanted, tell more about this car.

Hello.

I am on the lookout for an Olds cutlass Convertible.

I have som pictures from the owner and I would like if you could tell me more about it, such as... :

Year and model?
Is it a 455?
things that are not original etc.
Anything you think when you see it.

Thank you

It's a 69 (although without tail lights I can't be sure). Probably a Cutlass S but I don't know 69's as well as 68's. In 68 there were only two models of convertibles, 442 and Cutlass S. The motor pics are too small for me to tell what motor it is. Maybe someone else has better eyes than me

Not original:

Steering wheel
shifter handle
rear wing
most of the engine dress

I'm sure a lot more

I can't tell if the peak moulding is there from the tiny pic

It a Cutlass S with 442 grills, Chevy SS emblems,
442 rocket door panel emblems, nice, auto w/air,
no air. Cutlass S trunk lid. rear spolier from a ?
I don't think you could order a 455 in the S, but
I could be mistaken.

It is the best year convertible made

Peak molding refers to the chrome strips running from the side molding that runs from front to back.

lots of non original engine dress up

door panels. steering wheel, T handle shifter to name a few

442 grilles, big rear wing

oh an of course the SS badges which do not belong.

Only A body with a 455 in '69 was the Hurst/Olds.

So no, it's not an original 455 car. It does have a big block in it now, but no way to tell which one from the pics. You'll need the numbers from the engine to tell for sure. It could be 400, 425 or 455.

Post the #'s on the timing cover shelf.
They are right below the thermostat housing.

OK. Peak moulding, got it now :-) It has them.
Cutlass S = Cutlass Supreme ?
Door panel are they original from another Olds or "homemade" ?
If one of you guys would upload a picture or pictures to guide me to the location of engine number, chassis number ( VIN number ) and markings on the tops. Read something about "J" tops where more restricted...?
I know, lots of newbie questions, please have patience.

Are you from Denmark? I saw this car for sale a while ago here, overpriced and with pretty much everything wrong.

That's not to say that it can't be made beautiful, but for everything that's unoriginal, there's a chance it doesn't work as intended.

Alright, PM sent.

---
Cutlass S is not the same as the Cutlass Supreme. Base model was the F-85, Cutlass S was middle range, Cutlass Supreme was top of the range.

Door sides could be from any A-body (other GM divisions also did A-body car, like the Chevelle or the Skylark).

The VIN is in the bottom of the front windshield, in the driver's side. A small strip of metal riveted to the dash core/body, a bit recessed.

Looking at the engine, you have the silver(aluminum) intake manifold, in front of that you have the water pump, on which the fan is mounted. Between these two is a recessed area which has a number, which is the engine number.

Looks to me like the engine is red, which would indicate a 400, but of course, any engine can be painted any color, so the numbers will be necessary for a positive ID.

But the Cutlass Supreme or F-85 were not available in a convertible in 68-69, only a Cutlass S. (and 442)

Look closely at the amount of rise behind the water pump. It looks to me like this is a small block because there is very little block rising up like a big block would have. I would have to look at a block in my shop to be sure, but IMHO, this is not a big block engine. Also the website for the first thumbnail pic is V8 small block....

In 69 400's were a copper color [not that it matters] Could be painted any color, The H/O 455 was Red in 69

Looks like a lot of mods to this car.We really need a engine # to give you more information.

Thank you very much all of you. And thanks to Seff for chatting with me on the phone. It is nice to hear from people who know something. I am going to pay him a visit and see the car and try to inspect it on my own. If I´m not scarred of I will return with some friends of mine with better knowledge on the technical stuff.
The fact that the car is on sale again, maybe even from the same guy is not in his favour. I will post back with more details.

Look again at this photo:

Note the small rib that runs from the front cover flange to the front of the block just inboard of the oil fill tube. This rib is only on BBOs, not SBOs.

OK, so I went and had a look at this car. The condition of the car is where I would have no trouble using it as a daily driver since it appears to have not been looed carefully after for a couple of year. It show alot of wear and is also in need of a paintjob. the price seems to be alot over what I think is a fair price. Since I am looking for a car as a hobby it will have to be more original and in better shape. The body of the car seemed to be in ok condition rustwise but I have a feeling the bad paint might hide a lot of bondo.
I took some pictures with my mobile and it has just died on me so I can at this time not upload them.
The engine number ( according to my memory: 399060F )
And I think I saw a "C" on the heads.
If I get my mobile up and running I will post the pictures here.
the owner had the car for 3 years and is an OK guy, don´t think he is hidding anything about the car.

Those numbers can be hard to make out. My source has a 396021 F listed as 68-72 455 ci.
It seems 72-76 455's would be the same numbers with FA after the #.

Some 72 and all 73 and later 455 blocks with FA didn't have a boss cast in them for the clutch linkage.
