A51 means bucket seats, and 973 means they were blue vinyl.

A after the 24 means a white top.

For the rest, here is one of a number of resources that pops up with a quick web search.

Here's my try at it, although I don't have all of the codes.

ST 72 = STyle/model year = 1972

34257 = Oldsmobile (3), Cutlass Supreme (42), hardtop coupe (57)

R = assembly plant = Arlington TX

03536 BDY = body number = for internal assembly plant use

TR 973 = interior color and front seat type = blue vinyl (based on what Eric (MDchanic) said; I don't have that code)

A51 = option code = strato bucket seats

24 A PNT = lower body color ("24" which is nordic blue), vinyl top color ("A" which is white)

09C = time built code = September (09), third week of that month (C), 1971

784 = possibly another option code that I don't have

Hope this gets you a little further down the road!

nice thanks guys I didnt get an interior (or much of it) w the car all I got was blue door panels and some seats that didnt fit

I found a decent black interior (90% of it) on CL so i put that in. I thought it might have had a vinyl top at one time too

the sept 71 makes sense too as I dont have a seat belt wrning light and I read on here that although it was mandated for 72 model year the cars built in 71 for 72 didnt have one !!!

I cant recall anyone on here posting a car built in arlington TX is that unusual ??
