Hi all.
So I'm changing out the master cylinder on my 72 Delta 88. The booster seems fine, so I cheaped out and decided to just do the master c. This is probably where I f-ed up...

My new master cylinder looks to be the same, minus bleeder valves at the line connectors. (Never saw that before) However I discovered that the booster push rod is about 1.5 - 2 inches too long. There's not enough threads on the rod to adjust it in.

Any suggestions on what to do? I'm thinking a new booster is probably the smart way to go?

You just got the wrong master cylinder for your booster, probably not your fault.
According to Auto Zone, a 72 88 with a Delco Moraine booster takes a shallow hole in the master cylinder.
If it has a Bendix booster it takes a deep hole in the master cylinder.
Given that information I think you may have a Bendix booster and need a master cylinder for that application. Auto zone number NM1496 is their new unit--- and a reman unit is # M1496, these have the deep hole you need.
I would switch the master cylinder and keep the booster.

Devils advocate here... Could I just buy the correct power booster for the master cylinder that I already bought? Then I'd be new/new.

Confession: I adjusted the push rod all the way in and didn't mark where it was. Yes, I'm an as*hole.

Totally get your point! But my question is, since BOTH styles are listed as correct replacements, can I switch over? Will it bolt up and operate fine. The only difference seems to be the push rod length. And each style has a matching booster.

 

Most kits come with two push rods look in the box.

 

If my understanding your problem is the push rod between the booster and master cylinder then there are two different lengths on the push rod.

Your master should have came with a "bullet" that takes up the space the non booster cylinder is made for. It fits inside the end where you show the screwdriver is inserted.

 

Slept on it. Decided to do the correct thing and ordered the correct parts.
