Nilsson, I am not 100% sure but pretty sure that you could get a 350 in 71 and 1972

In 1972...The 442 trim package was available on the Cutlass (350 2bbl), Cutlass S (350 2 bbl), and Cutlass Supreme (convertible only, 350 4 bbl). The Cutlass and Cutlass S could be ordered with the L34 engine (350 4bbl), and all of them could be ordered with the L75 engine (455 4bbl).

I stand corrected I do remember this, I had forgotten that in 72 the 442 was once again a trim package.

Won't help in 1972. I owned a 1972 442 that was a factory 350 4bbl, single exhaust car.

Maybe it'a a Cutlass Supreme 350 with the W29 442 appearance package and W25 OAI hood options going by the Cutlass Supreme on the glove box door?
How would you determine the authenticity of any of it without a paper trail?

I think '72 "Cutlass Supreme" Glove box emblem is correct for 442 convertible. 350 is common in '72 442's. Don't think it came w/ that hood & stripes, though I think it could have as noted above.

Only way to tell "correctness" is build sheet or broadcast sheet. On the one I'm restoring right now (Lansing car), broadcast sheet was hog ringed to the passenger seatback frame underneath the plastic back panel.

I do know that if the car is solid & in good mechanical condition, correct or not, buyer got a sweet deal on a sharp looking car.

A 1972 442 with a 350 (180hp?) I think it's safe to say that 442's as we know them pretty much died in 72. Also known as a sheep in wolves clothing.

But still a great looking car.

My sister had a 72 442 with a 350 4bbl it was on the weak side, but did say 442 on the glove box. I'll be honest its a good looking car and looks like you got it for good price. Go out have fun with it show it off.

It's missing the OAI air cleaner. 350 or not I think the hood and cleaner were all part of that option...

according to the Oldsmobile 442 & W-Machines Restoration Guide page 146, dual exhaust standard, it could have had the bumper cutouts or not, it should have front and rear sway bars with boxed lower rear control arms, number 7 cast cylinder heads.

and from the VIN it is a Supreme (like Bluevista said) with a 2 bbl but it could have been a 442. The only way to be certain is some kind of paper trail. Heck for that matter, I have a 442.

The car is a Cutlass 442 if it is an original W29 car. If you mean that it's not a 442 because it doesn't live up to the original designation (4 spd, 4 barrel dual exhaust) then anything after 1964 is not a 442. In '65 you could get an automatic, so there goes the first "4". In 1968 the 442 was a separate model. No such thing as a 1968-1971 Cutlass 442. In those years it's either a 442 or a Cutlass. Any ads you see selling a 1970 Cutlass 442 is one of two things...1. the owner doesn't know what he has or 2, it's a clone (a Cutlass made to look like a 442).

In 72 the 442 was an option again because of insurance rates (mostly). HP after 1970 was rated as net not gross, so comparing pre 71 gross HP ratings to post 70 net ratings is comparing apples to oranges.

Checking it out is good, but the only way to tell if a 72 is a W29 car is to find the build sheet. If the 72 442 has a X in the serial number then it's a 442 W30. No "X", then you'll have to see the build sheet to know for sure.

The 1972 W30 was still a *very* potent monster. Hardly a sheep. Your death announcement is a bit premature.

Fender braces would only be there if a 455 was originally installed.

Wow........a drop top Cutlass 442 for only < $12,000......in great condition.
That's a STEAAAAAL IMO.

I think you got lucky getting it that cheap.
I've wanted a vert 442 for AGES now.

My comment was specifically referring to the 442 (Cutlass with trim package)
with a 350 not the optional w30 which were rare with only 639 being produced.

I agree if the car is as solid as it looks good you made out like a bandit no matter if it is a 442 or not.

Nice car enjoy it, I certainly would and have no buyers remorse at that price. That is the kind of deal I would like to find for a vert.

There's a fender brace, that is a rod, in side the fender that would bolt into the holes by the hinge ...
