Heater box removal on a G-body Cutlass.

Has anyone removed the heater/AC box under the hood of a G-body Cutlass? I have a 1979 that I would like to remove the heater box from and bolt in some sheet metal and paint it. The car is a show/race car so I really do not ever see me using it, I also like the clean look under the hood without it. Thanks for your input.

I've seen it done many times.... I even had mine out for a while then reinstalled... UMI Performance (and I am sure there are others) makes a replacement panel.... It might seem a little pricey, but by the time you purchase sheet metal (aluminum or steel), cut to fit, drill all the holes, etc. maybe the price isn't so bad............

AC box removal help

Can someone please tell me how this AC/heater box comes out? I have all of the bolts I can see lose and the box pulled away from the firewall about an inch, but it still will not pull out. It seems like there might be more bolts holding it from the bottom. Thanks

Looks like you got to disassemble the unit some to remove it.
Here is from the 1986 manual, hope it can help...

Follow those steps Rob shared with you above and add these.
You will probably catch the duct work under the dash. You need to remove the fenderwell and wheel, the top of the box, remove the evaporator and heater core (just extra weight), and rotate the box towards the engine while lifting it up.

I have seen it done with the top and fenderwell left in the car, but the end result is not very pretty.

Good luck.

Can you take a few pictures of your removal progress and post them here?
I am interested on how it will be to remove the evap core. The one in my '86 needs to be removed and pressure tested before I recharge it with precious R12...
Thanks!

Oh - and do not trash any of it before listing it for sale here.

That is what I was wondering about, I ended up removing the fender well to get to the bolts. I could not get the inside duct work apart until the box broke on the outside. I was able to get the top of the box off and get the heater and evap core out pretty easy. All I did was removed all 11 bolts from the fire wall and used a large standard screw driver to break the seal. Once you do that just remove the bolts holding the top of the box together and pull the top off to get to your evap core. You also have to remove the chrome strip running across the bottom of your windshield. I hope this helps.

I broke the box trying to get it out. I will take pictures of it removed if you would like. I am using the aluminum delete plate from UMI Performance.
