Heat/AC Blower Motors

I am restoring my heater/AC boxes. how tough are the original blower motors? mine works hooked it up to a battery and it flat spins! has no squeaks, wobbles, or side play. does have end play (in and out). Should I replace it anyway?

OEM...Made in USA....anything available today chances are very good its... you guessed it offshore JUNK. If the OEM works well, give the bushings a little lube and reinstall IMO. Id lean more towards a light electric motor oil that comes in the oilers for furnace blower motors.

I install new blower motors made in Canada. You can pick one up from Advance auto parts. The ones that Ive seen from Autozone or Oreillys are from China. If your original Delco is in good shape, then it can probably still work for yrs to come. Id just make sure to test it with the squirrel cage installed because ive had some work fine without it and squeal with it installed.

I am all for saving OEM and it looks like mine is going to make it. After bead blasting the fan only and repaint this thing looks better than new. Blew out the inside of the motor a few drops of WD40 on the bushings and hook it up to the battery, spins like a top and no noise.

You didn't remove any small, insignificant metal clips on the squirrel cage, DID YOU?
I hope not, as those are there for fine-tuning the balance.

I'd lube it up with some 3-In-1 oil, or something similar that's thicker than WD-40 before reassembling.

x eleventy billion

The factory original 1968 OEM blower in my Cutlass works fine. Smooth & quiet.

I've gone thru 3 aftermarket (2 diff companies) blowers for my '04 Chevy truck in the last 8 years. They're very noisy right out of the box and get worse with (even slight) age. I now have a procedure where I 'rebuild' it by polishing the brushes & armature contacts and clean/lube all friction points. Sounds better than stock when done, but 6-8 months later it's back to sounding like a tree shredder.

I was hoping mine was going to be good, You just can't beat OEM. They just don't build them like they use to. I have heard that it takes something catastrophic to really hurt the ole motors.
