Headlight **** removal

i have tried several ways to remove my headlight **** on my 1979 hurst olds , without success .would anyone have info on how this is done. I was told to reach under dash and find button on headlight switch itself , but I think it is impossible to reach my hand to the switch without removing other things. Thanks for any help in advance

That is the way it has to happen, Get a good flash light and look up from the bottom sometimes you can take a LONG rod and push the release button, doesn't look very big but can sure be a PITA some times. Good luck

Also remember when trying to pull the **** out, pull the lights all the way on, push the button, then pull again and the stem and **** should come out. I always disconnect the battery because the lights are on until you re-install the stem.

Once you pull the stem out of the switch, you can use a long narrow probe to turn the lights off again. A barbeque skewer comes to mind.

Or disconnect the battery before messing with the light switch.

But the stem will not go back in and catch with the light switch in the off position.

it will if you push hard enough
if the parts are OEM
the shaft is tapered at the end and moves aside the internal holder clip and engages it.

beware of Chinese parts- working on a '69 some time ago, the release button refused to let go of the ****/shaft. Pulled so hard I thought I was going to break the dash. Ended up cutting **** off to extract the switch. out of curiosity, I dismantled the switch- it felt cheap and poorly made- to find that they did not form the engaging tab correctly, and once the shaft was in place it could never release by means of the usual release button. Grrrrrrr....

Good thing spare ****/shafts are available.

I smashed that pc of crap and put a good used REAL GM switch in there.

It has been my experience that when you push the stem back into the switch, maybe half the time the switch pushes all the way off before the stem locks in anyway, so yes it will.
