Having trouble uploading pictures to update my thread
Went to major builds & projects to update my thread "Tony's 72 cutlass restoration" and cannot get my pictures to upload. with the new updates to this site now I'm having trouble have tried several times to no avail. Please help.
Joe just went back and tried it again, looks like its working, but my pictures are a lot bigger, could the size of the pictures have something to do with it? or is it just my patience?
I had all kinds of problems with pictures while using Internet Explorer. Switched to Firefox and everything works great. I'm no techno-geek but it seems like Internet Explorer is becoming less relevant daily.
Okay went back and fought thru it and managed to complete the update. They really make it hard for us old farts to change from the ways we used to.
Anyway go over and have a look at my progress.

As has been noted, image size matters A LOT. Don't just try to upload the raw image file that comes off your camera. Depending on your camera's settings, each photo could be 2 or 3 MB in size. That's about 10 times too large for web uploading and viewing and will choke the system if you try to upload them. The system may just hang, and that may be why you're not able to upload photos.
I've said it 100 times before, and I'll say it another 100 times. GET THIS PROGRAM. Image Resizer for Windows. I use it ALL THE TIME. It is the best computer program since sliced bread.
It is a snap to download and install, it is free, and it appears in the pop-up menu when you right-click a photo. You can resize to three different pre-set sizes or make a custom size of your own choosing. You can have the program resize the original file or leave the original file alone and make a resized copy. You resize a single file or select an entire directory of photos and resize them all at once. It takes two seconds to resize a photo. No need to load it it a photo-editing program like Paint or Photoshop and then save it at a different size.

If I was in charge of this website, and I'm not, I would put a link to this program in any sticky that deals with photos and photo uploading. The problems that people have uploading photos are not solely due to not knowing how to use the site. Issues with the photos themselves can be a factor as well if not the actual cause.

I have been here since 2008 and never got this window till about 2 months ago or so and is when all my problems started. I can do the exact same thing three different time and one will work and the others do not. Same thing on my windows 7 computer at work. I use the same camera as I did before the change.
It's difficult to diagnose individual people's problems without being in front of their computer. My suggestion is to at least do the following.
1. Always make sure my browser is the latest version. Use Firefox or Chrome.
2. Do not use Internet Explorer. It is still maintained by Microsoft, but it is a legacy program that will probably have increasing problems with some websites as time moves forward.
3. Microsoft Edge, the replacement for IE, is probably OK, but I have come across sites, including one I access often at my employer as part of my job, where we are specifically told NOT to use Edge because it does not work well with that particular site.
4. Do not use any version of Windows earlier than 7. There are many reasons besides difficulty with this site to adhere to that.
5. Make sure your photos are not any larger in file size than necessary.
Something else that may or may not be an issue is your upload speed. It's not the same as the download speed and is often much lower. Too low an upload speed might cause uploads to stall and never be completed.
You can check your actual speeds at any time by going to
https://www.speedtest.net/
I tested my speeds just now and got 50 ms ping, 175.35 Mbps download speed, 5.93 Mbps upload speed. I would think that if your upload speed is less than perhaps 1 or 2 Mbps, you might have problems. I have Xfinity as my internet service provider. I used to have Centurylink, and my speeds were about 18 or 19 Mbps download and about 1.8 to 1.9 Mbps upload. That was the most Centurylink could offer based on what the old-fashioned phone lines are capable of. Once in a while I'd have problems uploading a larger file, and switching to a faster service has made a big difference. I did not ever have problems, though, with this site.
Maybe it's because of Firefox, but I was using a very similar window prior to the site upgrade. I want to say it's been at least a year, but memory is the second thing to go...
Another thought that comes to mind, and I'm just tossing out ideas here, is the amount of memory a computer has. Computers that are old enough to still be running older versions of Windows could have as little as 2 GB. As time moves forward, programs grow in complexity, and keeping several open at once consumes more and more of the computer's resources and can slow things down if too many programs, or perhaps too many browser windows, are open at one time. My current computer has 16 GB of RAM, and I would think a minimum of 4 GB is OK and 8 GB would be better.
So the basic upload process hasn't changed, but they added a feature to allow you to add photos directly from your album, if you have any stored there, in addition to uploading from your computer.

I’m having a related issue. There is no problem uploading pictures to a thread, however, when trying to upload pictures to a private message I can’t even get to “my images”. BTW I am using Firefox on my desktop. The same thing occurs on my IPad.
I could be wrong, but I don't think you can upload pictures to a private message.
Currently, the only way to post an image into a PM is via a linked URL. This may be a function of how the Administrator(s) have configured the PHP properties for PMs; or, it may simply be the ability to 'embed' (upload from a device) is not a property the developer(s) built into the software.
Note the Windows resizer does the trick! TX Jaunty.
Wonder what the techno geeks just had to change...fir the better?...grrrr
What is the max or recommended size for uploads here?
I used medium on the resizer which brought a 4 + Meg JPEG down to less than 2K..
It works now yay.
