I've got a couple doors with damage up high plus several sets of 4 door doors that I'm considering hauling to the scrap yard. But I'm wondering if I should take the sawzall and cut off the bottom several inches. I know the rocker panel is below the door, but it looks to me like much of the fender curve, especially in the 64-65 and 68-72 years is matched in the door skin. Has anybody ever done this? In addition I read a post where someone used the heel of a 1965 fender to repair the rear quarter panel on their car. It looks to me like the body line of the rear quarter panel is matched in the door skin even on 4 door cars.

Just brainstorming before I send something to the melting pot that could be used as a patch panel.

I used a old hood one time for floor patches........I told everyone it got all Oldsmobile metal in it......

My body guy is going to use part of the door from a 64 4 door for my rear quarter repair on my 65 so the metal will be the same grade and he said looks like he just needs to trim the bottom but we have not done it yet will let you know how it goes over this winter

 

We've done it on our trucks. Door skins, hoods, whatever OE metal you can get for rust patches in fenders, floorboards etc. In the 80's GM trucks, I've seen guys use door skin metal to close off gas tank holes in both sides of the bed, and relocate one of the gas door to the back of the bed on one side for rear center mounted Burb tank.

I've also heard of guys having issues welding in metal, where the new metal has different properties than the old metal. Temp setting is to cool for the old metal, and to hot for the new so it comes out looking bad. Using OE metal, solves that issue too.
