Has anyone ever seen these???
Has anyone ever come across a "D" head with the casting # 403-686?
Despite what some have said, I have a d/C (251) set of D heads that are real. No Octania stuff here or JB WELD etc.
Notice the large #1 in the spark plug area.

Huh
Conspicuously absent is that 403686 in photos
"d/C" I take it is for Date Coded? Not "D" and "C" casting ID's...
I see what appears to be cast iron "D" letters. One has a round head screw adjacent, one has a flat head screw.
I do not see any of that fakey *** JB Weld Octania Bullsnort ripoff faux modifed cheatin' shtuff. Maybe the 403686 part is faked.
OTOH, it is not unheard of for factory parts to have a "typo," if you will, in the casting ID. I have photos of a Water Pump- the rare X casting? with a digit missing... An intake with the letter changed to the subsequent run, but the 6-digit number still what the previous casting would be... so by no means is it impossible to believe that the factory made D heads with 403686 casting number. I would buy those in a flash just to have such an oddity... so, this begs the question, is the casting more like an E or more like a D [separated crossover].
The date code being not one of the few known "D" head dates indicates that they are more likely a factory error where the D part was left on the mold after they started making E castings. Day 265 is the highest known Julian date for D heads, which may or may not be 14 days after your 251. It may be about a year earlier. No year digit [what were they thinking?]
What, pray tell, is the significance of that "1" ??
Every head has SOMETHING there.
