Hagerty and Grundy and who else?

I know those two have been discussed, but are there others that are competitive and good service? Putting the silver car back on the road this week and gotta get classic car insurance. I’ll be lucky to put 100 miles a year on it…

I'm looking myself, & some of the other major players are American Collectors, Heacock & Condon Skelly.

Not sure about prices, but they all seem about the same. The one thing I can say about Hagerty, is that if you have a claim, they are good. I have had two claims with they, and they were great.

JC is the cheapest at around $450/year. The rest of them are $750-$880.

Simply throwing out a dollar figure per year for one company or another can be very misleading without stating the exact conditions of the policy like:
1. Is it a guaranteed value policy agreed to upfront if you have a total loss, or are you at the mercy of an adjuster to determine a value?
2.. What kind of deductibles do you have for collision and comprehensive?
3. Are there restrictions on where and in what type of structure you can keep the car in?
4. Are there restrictions on how the car can be used and how many miles it can be driven per year?
5. Does the policy include emergency road service, or do you have to pay extra for it?

Without defining all of these types of coverages/parameters, you don't know if you're comparing apples to apples, or apples to oranges?

True true, there are differences, but the important stuff, stated value coverage, usage restrictions, liability amounts, deductibles, etc. excluding roadside assistance and other "perk" type stuff, JC seems to be the best for me so far. I'll still get more details from each. I still have to finish a few cosmetic things before I take pics anyway.

I have had American Collectors for about 8 years. I had it on my 54 Olds and now have it on my 75 Hurst/Olds, The only claims I have had have been for towing but they have been paid promptly. When it comes renewal time I usually get a quote from Hagerty and they are slightly higher. JC Taylor was $50/year less which was not enough to make me change.

I have American Collectors on 4 cars and have not made a claim. They are expensive and limiting but seem to be strong on coverage.

I disagree. I had Hagerty on my 71. They were reluctant to cover damage to the exhaust tips when a tow truck driver was an ignoramus.

I have American Collectors now and they do much better.

I used to have J.C. Taylor for 30 years on my 57 olds., but they raised my rates and didn't give me the service I had in the past with them and never had a claim with them. I switched to grundy 7 years ago and couldn't be happier. No limits on driving my car and most important agreed value coverage!!

American Collectors for many years. If you go with them, be sure to be ready to send them photos of all 4 sides of the car. They WILL keep after you to get them if you don't.

Most insurance companies require these photo's.

I did the photos of my 71 & 96 98s; as well as, my Bullnose truck for American Collectors. They also wanted a pic of my shop where I park them.

I have mine insured with AAA along with all my other vehicles. It is an agreed upon value policy 5k miles a year. The agent came out to the house took pics of the car and the garage. We have never had a problem with them and have been using them for over 30 years.

Side note: Most do not cover any sort of track use. American Collectors informed me that I could drive onto a track and park for a photo op, and idle on and off. Parade laps or anything more strenuous is not covered.

I insure my 1965 Jetstar1 with State Farm and they do a great job. I gave it a test last fall when I had a claim for some body work. Agent basically said as long as its under your stated value, you're good. Took car to a shop that did older car repairs that was not on the "accepted" list without issue. Know your rights on insurance in your state. 4 pictures was also required. The funny thing was that they tried to conduct the claim process with cell phone photos, etc. Well that didn't work and the shop had an adjuster come out to his business and everything was fine after he was able to visually look at stuff that is not a Honda or Toyota.

There is a very big difference between stated and agreed value, you want agreed.

That is 100% spot on, if the Insurance carrier you are looking at lists Stated Value as a part of their Insuring Agreement, keep shopping for another one that lists Agreed Value.

Do all of you keep your cars inside a garage (locked storage)? I've got a few classics and I'm trying to find coverage for them. I've got more cars than I do garage space. Grundy & American Collectors won't insure anything thats not inside a garage.

Thanks
CJB

Correct. I don't know of an insurer that covers classic cars that aren't parked in a garage.

I have a 2 car attached garage and a 3 car shop. My 96 & 71 Oldsmobiles are parked in the shop along with my 86 Ford truck. I park my daily driver in the house garage. Momma so rarely parks her car in the garage that I often think I should get another toy.

You get a better rate if your cars are garaged. My 3 cars with Hagarty are not garaged, they know it.

Thanks for all the replies, JC Taylor wants Stated Value rather than Agreed and they are looking at what a 1988 Cutlass has sold for statistically. He said he would likely be able to meet my requested $25k, but wasn't sure until it would go to underwriting.

Yes, parked in my garage full time.

Again, read what stated value encompasses.

Heck right now, I'm just simply trying to find someone who will insure. Cost of rates are not a factor when I can't get anyone to the table. But I'm glad to hear you've got Hagerty with 3 cars not garaged! That makes me hopeful.

Thanks
