Got some splainin' to do?

I am a pre 455 Olds geezer, and so I came across this breather in my hoard that I am curious about. Can someone explain why this would have a decal as shown on the bottom of the lid? Is this legit? Looks like someone had been running it this way, but the seal is clearly on top.
Thanks

That's weird.

Maybe the owner drove with the air cleaner lid upside down and figured he MAW put the Oldsmobile decal on the side you could see.

Exactly. Some previous owner flipped the lid and bought a decal from the parts counter to stick on that side.

I just knew it had to be S.O. and worth about a thousand dollars. I'll have admit I've flipped my lid to get some extra air intake in my younger days. The decal and placement looks so authentic and it's been on there for quite some time. I'm going to see if I can find it a new home.

I recall back in 1982 flipping the lid on my 70 Supreme and being surprised that it barked the tires on a 35 mph WOT downshift to first. That told me a lot about how restrictive the single snorkel air cleaner was.

My grandfather put my 72 Monte Carlo's housing under a mill and put slots on the bottom for about 120 degrees of the perimeter. I forget the holes are there, they are outside of the filter's circumference.

More air flow is better. The factory was balancing emissions and operability. We toss emissions and concentrate on operability.
