GM Part Number Help/Question

I just received my GM 1970 Cutlass/442 Assembly Manual. The exploded view diagrams are very helpful but I was wondering if there is a reference guide that identifies what the actual part numbers represent. For instance, part number 9431937 is a bolt in the clutch pedal control. How can I get a description of what that bolt is?

An original Oldsmobile Parts Catalog, like what the guys at the dealer parts counter used to use, will give a description of each part number. But more often than not, things like bolt diameter, thread count and length are not included. Also, the description listed for each part varies from year to year, so it can be useful to have multiple editions of the parts catalog.

Another tactic that works sometimes is to simply google the GM part number. Due to the high volumes GM bought, the same bolts were sometimes adopted by other industries. And the bolt manufacturers often use the GM part number as their own. So you sometimes find not only the description of that 40-year-old bolt, you also find that you can still buy it!

Sometimes the "AMK Products" catalog will have a cross reference to a GM part number so that you can get the dimensions of a fastener. However, I looked up your bolt and it isn't in the catalog. If you have the old bolt and just want to replace it, I would compare what you have to the fasteners they show in the AMK Products catalog...you just might find a match.

We should undertake a collaborative project to source every part for all years in a database. Big long effort, but it would be one awesome resource.

I started on that already... don't forget a photo of each item.

I have a fastener sheet started too, mostly engine bolts and such.

9431937 is not shown.

Thanks everyone for the feedback.
Brett,
Did you just happen to know what the bolt was or did you find a resource that described it?

A little of both, have had to take that item apart a few times in the past, so I was relatively sure of the diameter...but a look at the Standard Part Cat confirmed the length specs

Is that from a particular year catalog or is there only one edition?

I've used one, butI would believe there was probably one every year...or so, for example there is at least 2 different return springs in the 69-72 auto floor shifter handles alone.
