Getting Previous Title Back?

I saw this comment on a BaT auction for a 1964 GTO (Single-Family-Owned 1964 Pontiac GTO Sport Coupe Tri-Power 4-Speed for sale on BaT Auctions - ending March 18 (Lot #184,089) | Bring a Trailer, Mar 15 at 10:16 AM):

"I ask because in NC if you want to keep an older title (either NC or non-NC issued) all you have to do is write at the top of the title you are submitting “Buyer would like to have this title returned to them” and they will mail it back to you after they process it. In all of my years of being an old car guy I never knew this and only recently discovered this when I was turning in an original 1970 title and mentioned to the agent “The seller is 91 and was sharp as a tack…I wish I could keep this title” and the agent said “I will go ask my boss” and she came back and said “we just have to write it across the top”. Just wondered if….?"

Has anyone ever done this, & been successful? In Ohio?

I asked if I could keep the original title to my '67 Toronado when I changed it into my name, and the lady at the BMW stated that Ohio requires the surrender of the original title when getting a new one. I made color copies of the original to keep, but the original was lost to the state. The only thing I can think of is if you claim the title was lost and get a new one that way...? Not sure how legal that would be, etc.

Nothing beats an old title to a car. My 66' Oldsmobile's Michigan title looks very "artsy" compared to the "sterile" newer ones. Maybe that is why I kept my car for so long........
