Gas tank

Is there any value/point of keeping an original OEM tank? Mine had a very small hole that showed up right in the bottom middle so I replaced it. Looked like maybe very slight seepage too but to knock on the tank with my hand all around it is solid. Could easily be patched up with an epoxy. Is there any value to it or point of keeping it?

I kept my OEM 72 tank. It had a leak that got patched with metal though. I wouldn't patch a gas tank with epoxy, although I might coat the inside of the tank with it. BTW, if it's the original tank it will have the part number stamped into it.

I'll keep mine and put it up for sale at a swap meet for small $.

I replaced mine with a Spectra GM34-R. What did you use?

I don't recall the brand. I ordered it from EBay. Fit just fine and I didn't notice any differences. I put new sending unit and straps in at the same time. If I dig I could find the brand. I'm not doing a show restoration or anything, so I went with the one that was like $119 or whatever it was. I'd be willing to bet it's exactly the same as the more expensive ones.

As long as it fits and works. I ended up paying about 2x what you did because it's manufactured in Canada (about 1/2 hour from where I live), shipped to the US for sale, and shipped back to Canada to point of sale. How stupid can it get? They refuse to sell to the retail market directly.

Still never got an answer....this tank means nothing at all to me. If someone wants an original tank they can have it but I just don't see the point of it. That's why I'm checking before it gets scrapped just in case I'm wrong.

If it had a hole already, chances are there's another one somewhere close to coming through. The replacements now are decent quality and not that expensive, as you noted. Chuck it, not worth the hassle, IMO.

When doing the restoration on my 71 442 I wanted to keep mine because it is date coded. Actually both my 71 A-bodies have dated coded tanks. No other reason. New would be more impressive to look at do to the new metal finish.
