I don't know what they had OEM, but you could maybe try a small piece of fiberglass insulation.....?

...or you can buy a brand new one (reproduction but looks pretty authentic) through www.fusick.com. They call it a "1969-70 Gas Tank Vent Tube Filter Kit". The only part number I have for it is GTF690K but that may have changed - my catalog is a few years old. It comes with new new hoses, clamps and the filter. I have one on my '69 as my old one was shot, like yours.

I have seen a couple of originals that appeared to be a foam type material. But it’s possible someone used that, as I didn’t buy the cars new, so .... ?

Replacing would be best but how about wadding up some prefilter foam used on small engine air filters. It lives around gas fumes and should live for a while in this application.
Don't pack too tight air still needs to flow.

Looking at your picture it’s on the right rear. Mine is off a 69, don’t know about other years.
