68 Cutlass fuel vent leaking

Hi All, so I just filled up my gas tank and when I stopped to visit my cousin and got out of the Cutlass, I noticed there was fuel dripping from the fuel tank. So we jacked up the car and looked underneath and it appears the leak is coming from 2 small vent holes on the fuel tank/passenger side.
Did I over fill the tank so it’s dripping out?
Are the 2 vents supposed to be empty or have a plug in them? Should I drain fuel tank to a certain level so it doesn’t leak from the vent holes? Thank you all...

You might want to retrofit it with the "1969-70 Gas Tank Vent Tube Filter Kit", available from Fusick (www.fusick.com). The part number I have is GTF690K but that might have changed. Price is around $25-$30. The vent tubes on my '68 were old and cracked and there is something stuffed in the upper end of each tube to allow venting of the gas fumes without allowing gas to splash out. The '69-'70 set-up is very similar except the end of each tube is attached to a separate venting device that does the same job as what was stuffed in the '68 vent tubes. I put one on my '68. No one sees it - it's out of sight and it does the job it was designed to do.

That's the part but I don['t have an after-install pic. It went in pretty easy with the hose clamps that were provided. And I used the metal tab on the gas tank to hold everything upright once I attached the hoses to the outlets on the tank. I like it because it represents an upgrade to what was offered in the '68 model year. Plus, my '68 is pretty much correct as it would have come from the assembly plant so, with this assembly hidden away where no one can see it, I found that acceptable to deviate from the assembly plant norm.

Beautiful car and welcome to this site if I haven't welcomed you already! There is tons of information here, yours at the asking if you have questions about your car. I'm kind of a novice with some technical expertise but there are others here that can practically tell you what the bolt head should look like on any fastener for your car! Enjoy your ride and don't be afraid to ask if you have questions!

Randy,
so I ordered part after your suggestion. Also, I siphoned out 4 gallons and the fuel leak stopped
I guess I overfilled tank. I just picked this Cutlass up so I’m not sure what the gallon tank size is. Still shows half a tank.

If it's the same as the 70-72 Cutlass the tank holds 20 gallons.

What Kenneth said! With the vent tubes, fuel shouldn't spill out with the tank full. I usually round off to the nearest 10 cents after the nozzle shuts off. Even though in Oregon the attendant is supposed to pump the gas, they will let me do it with the 4-4-2! It's kind of funny because most attendants don't know where the fill tube is on my Oldsmobiles.

Gents,
I had the same vent issue (69 442 convertible) with a new tank from OPGI. I installed all new hoses and vent assy from Fusick, but still had gas puking after a fill up--a serious and dangerous amount. After pounding the phone-OPGI immediately offered to ship me a new tank--no questions. It appears that some tanks were manufactured (thanks China) with screwed up vents. It just came, and that is spurring me to my winter project of Fuel Injection!
1969 442, 4 speed, with newly built 455--Edelbrock top end, 435 hp and 540ft.lbs torque--I started it on a friends Dyno to break it in right--a great and fun experience! Anyone need a new (500 miles) Edelbrock 800 cfm AVS II ?

If your gauge / sender is anything like mine, it is nowhere close to being a linear representation of the fuel level. Routinely, after a fill, I can drive ~1/4 tank before the needle moves off "F". So by my estimate, the gauge's range covers only the last 3/4 of the tank, thus a reading of half-full is really only about 3/8 of a tank. Its been like this since at least '74 when dad purchased the car from its original owner (our neighbor) w/ ~23K miles.

LOVELY car BTW. Can't beat Scarlet Red w/ Black top.
