Fuel Tank questions 68 Cutlass

I need to install a tank on my car, no old tank to look at. I am not sure what all I need. Tank, sending unit, straps and bolts, cap,,,,,

1. Do I need a vented sending unit?
2. If so how is it configured?
3. What about a return line? Required?
4. If so how is it configured?
5. Is there a pad between the tank and trunk?

I believe I am using a single wire connection to the gauge. I am also using a mechanical pump on the engine.

Thx, for any help

Howie

You would be well advised to consult a '68 Factory Service Manual. If you don't have one, you can access one for free at Wildaboutcars.com

In reading that manual just now, whether or not your car has a fuel return line depends on which engine it has. Cars equipped with a 350 did not, while those equipped with a 400 did. The sending units are different, too, depending on the engine.

You want section 8 of the service manual.

You could also look at the fuel pump and see if has a return...definetly look at service manual to see what you need

...or see if you have a return line that could be plugged off, with just an inlet outlet fuel pump...i think the return and fuel line run parallel at the frame by the control arm...on my 69 anyway

Thx Jaunty and pogo, I will look at the manual. Its a 350 and there is nothing on the car, frame, or pump that I can cross check with. It's a totally stripped car. Thx, I'll check in the manual.

Thx

Howie

It sounds like it really doesn't matter at this point, unless you're looking for strict factory-correctness.

I needed a new sending unit for my '67 Delta 88, and they're not made new for this car. I ended up using one designed for a '72 Delta 88. It was a drop-in replacement, but it had return line I did not need. I just capped it.

1. Do I need a vented sending unit?
2. If so how is it configured?
No. The evap vent is for 1970-later cars with the charcoal canister.

3. What about a return line? Required?
Not required, but a good idea with today's ethanol-loaded gasoline to avoid percolation problems. If you don't have any lines on the frame rail now, just get the return line as well as the main line.

4. If so how is it configured?
Just use a pump with the return line fitting.

5. Is there a pad between the tank and trunk?
Yes, to prevent squeaks

I believe I am using a single wire connection to the gauge.
Yes, but the sender will also have a ground wire that bolts to the underside of the car.
